@pakman said in Japan Top League:

No cigar for BB in final. Is there coverage online? Hardly gets a mention in UK press and Planet Rugby/Scrum.com don’t seem to realise Japan exists!

Another trophy for Robbie Deans then.

@pakman Plenty in NZ media, who have been covering Top League as if BB is the only player in that Sungoliath team.

Bad day for Barrett as Wild Knights reign

Bad day for Barrett as Wild Knights reign

The coaching genius of Robbie Deans led Panasonic to a fifth Japanese title as the Wild Knights brought the curtain down on the Top League..

Here are a few clips I found on twitter. I'm hoping for highlights in the next day, or so.

'Japan Rugby League One' is a confusing name

Is it purely a rebranding of 'Top League'? Or have they changed the structure in some way?

@duluth 3 tiers now in the big time. Around 25 teams. More branded to region than company now

    Really?

It's the same company teams reorganized into three divisions.

Division 1 (12 teams in two conferences), Division 2 (6 teams) and Division 3 (6 teams). Teams can move up and down via playoffs. A bit hard to see, but from the below you can see that teams 10-12 in the top division play the top three from division . Similarly 4-6 from Division 2 play 1-3 from division 3.

@gt12 Look at some of the many name changes. Just looks to be an attempt to link or brand more to a city or area to improve the support base. I. E. Teams represent the area they are based in and not a company that may have large bases in multiple locations.
Maybe someone can confirm if any new changes away from the traditional squad of company employees.
Regardless it looks like an attempt to spread the pro level of the game wider in Japan.

You mean, like someone who lives in Japan and speaks (and reads) Japanese?

I might know someone like that.

Some of the teams have started including their locations (but not all), so I kind of see your point, but they are still company teams. An example is the Mazda team changing from the Mazda Blue Zoomers (Old Mazda Catchphrase) to Skyactive (New Mazda catchphrase) Hiroshima. Its just re-branding.

Edit: by the way, most of these teams were in existence, just we hardly heard of them, and they haven’t changed at all - Kamaishi sea waves have been that for a while.

Watching Suntory v Brave Lupus.. missed the first hour

Apparently it’s impossible to tackle Tevita Li

The first fives in this match are DMac and Tom Taylor
[edit]Oops, DMac is 15 but spending loads of time at first receiver[/edit]

Jacob Pierce has gone well from what I’ve seen

Pretty entertaining game to watch tbh. Defence was optional. Final score was 60-46 to Sungoliath.

I noticed that last year. He looked like the world's most dangerous player. Kerevi must score a million times a season.

I was watching this last and thinking what a absolute crock of shit this competition is. There is bugger all Japanese player in either team. It’s full of kiwis who should still be playing in nz.
It was a terrible game focused solely on attack. But hey all good if you wanna play solely for money. I certainly won’t be watching another game. Bring on the crusaders and NRL.

@chchfanatic majority of the teams players are Japanese. There's a big sprinkling of Kiwis, Aussies and Saffas, but they're mostly Japanese.

Yep there a few kiwi and Oz players there, but don't see what the problem with that is!
I must admit I find the standard of rugby a bit 'lite' for my taste, but it is ok, even if I probably won't watch a lot. That's not a big problem as I watch a bit of Gallagher Premiership, and that is bloody good ruby!
