Not popular to give him credit but Mundine is one of the better all round athletes I have seen .

Elite nrl player , played origin , boxing world title , Australian junior hurdles champion , and the Sydney Kings basketball were looking for his signature as a teenager ,

I don't quite know why SBW gets so much derision about playing different sports though. He is basically playing variations of one sport and adding in taking something his does in his training to a competitive environment as well.

Now compare that to Jeff Wilson who was a prodigious talent in rugby and cricket, with national representation and by all accounts could have probably played for the Tall lacks as well if he had the time to dedicate to a third sport. No one gives him shit about that.

Talking about SBW as a top boxer is the equivalent of Joseph Parker concentrating on Rugby and getting as far as a premier team in Auckland.....but no further.......

You'd have to say Goldie was a better all round "talent" ( not necessarily "athlete" ) than SBW or Hayne based on what he did. A lot of guys are very good at our winter and summer codes ( Kieran Read and Leon MacDonald to mention a couple, Rod Latham played rugby for Canterbury too ) but it's easy to forget that Wilson did all this to the highest level AND was a brilliant basketballer too which he never found time to play......

I always wonder where he would have stood in the echelon of Black Caps had he chosen to pursue that....there was a whole lot of decent ODI all rounders at the time so despite the All Blacks being better at what they did than the BCs ever were at that period I suspect he made the right choice.

We see Goldie a lot as my boy plays cricket with his. Will ask about basketball, actually may not seem him until November again. But anyway, I was telling my boy who he is and I said he was a better all round sportsman that SBW. Remember in cricket he could both bat and bowl. Athetic in the field too. True all arounder.

In Rugby he was competing against Jonah, Cully, Umaga, Randle, Reihana, Osborne, Cashmore etc....he did so and had a fine career.

In Cricket it would have been Cairns, Harris, Oram, Styris, Nash.....I could be completely wrong but I reckon ousting the likes of those guys would have been tougher despite NZs respective strength in Rugby and Cricket worldwide.......

Goldie's incredibly humble, so he could've just been talking himself down again. The way he downplays his rugby career, you'd think he was some scrub winger who only made Heartland level.

Do Goldie and his wife have any kids? Can't remember her name, and can't be fucked looking it up, but she was a very gifted sportswoman. Probably ended her netball career too early. Looking forward to see if the genes have been passed on if they have.

At primary school, Goldie also won Otago-Southland (and South Island in long jump, I think) titles in the 100 metres, long jump, and shotput!

I do recall him making a bit of a dick of himself doing an interview for a sort of "Sunday"-type current affairs show, where he said he didn't want to do any media work and just wanted to play rugby. Came across as very sulky and spoiled. He's certainly grown up from then! :)

Interesting (to a boxing newbie) that some folks think Joe needs a different coach. The things most of us have listed as work on's were things you could hear Barry telling him during the fight. Keep your hands up, work the body, and something about body position when throwing shots??

Guess the test is whether Barry can get Joe doing those things in the ring rather than just talking about them? While SH will pose a different challenge it'll be something to watch for - do we see Joe boxing differently etc...
