@hooroo I get about 500km for the same price. Fortunately I don't actually pay.

I’ve just ticked over 5000km since getting the PHEV on 28 July. The computer tells me that of that I’ve covered 1219 km on petrol with the rest on battery. It’s a big, heavy car and as I leave it in Hybrid mode (usually) the petrol engine is obviously kicking in under higher loads. So it’s no surprise the average consumption on petrol is 10.5 l/100km. So all up the fuel cost for the 5000km is $287.47. That’s not bad tbh. I’ve had cars that averaged 20+ l/100km.

That's outstanding. I get about 800ks out of my tank that costs me around $160-$180 to fill at the moment. I like your car a lot! 🙂

Is that diesel? Does it include the annual fee thing you have in NZ?

No, Petrol. No RUC's on top. They are included in price of Petrol.

So spent a good part of the long weekend going round car yards with partner who is looking at a new SUV. Initially thinking PHEV now edging towards full EV or was until she discovered that effectively you order now and hope to take delivery in Q3. That's for every manufacturer.

Volvo you can't even do a test drive. Why would you spend close to 6 figures on a car you can't test? Madness!

She's now totally conflicted as there are new models coming out in that timeframe so she's getting all angsty with lashings of FOMO as well.

interesting piece of intel you can do with what you will, the prices of batteries is about to go UP, rather than the constant decrease as tech improves that we were sort of sold.

If you were thinking of going EV, might be a good time to get your order in, lead time be damned.

@mariner4life commodity prices suck for that.

Bunch of people waving the solid-state flag which would be interesting.

Interested in a smaller EV? Perhaps the Cupra born?

Cupra Born arrives in Australia - carsales.com.au

Cupra Born arrives in Australia - carsales.com.au

Spanish challenger brand’s halo EV touches down on Aussie soil for testing ahead of local launch

Not sure if it is coming to NZ. It is supposed to arrive in Au, basically a nicer looking id3 with similar +s and -s.

I'm not convinced the new Kia e-Niro is really that new but the Greenzone mode is a good idea for a suburban PHEV
    https://www.hotcars.com/2023-kia-niro-facts-features/ (ignore the hyperbole bits)

Flying under the radar is the Lexus UX-300e, perhaps because it isn't that exciting (or roomy, or fast, or innovative). But compared to an ICE Lexus it looks ok value. Here is the NZ website: https://www.lexus.co.nz/en/models/ux/ux-300e-limited.html#overview
Don't know the availability in NZ and Australia but advertised as if available.

@nostrildamus that looks like a great little hatch based on the videos I've seen.

If the e-Niro was even AWD I'd be more interested in it.

Sadly, I think I'm going to have to choose between the XC40 if I want to keep up a modicum of camping or softroading, or the Polestar2 if I go back to a sedan.

I like both. Volvo have really turned a corner for me stylewise but the XC40 is a mite expensive and the Polestar2 ain't great for a family with a mutt plus the costly adds are painful (but the base version looks a good deal in Oz).

I think VW EVs will take years to arrive, the Arriya looks nice but is a bit of a mirage, and even the Skoda EV will take months or years to arrive and looks a little dumpy). Toyota's offering (let's make an ugly RAV at Lexus price) doesn't look a great option either.

The AWD options-look pretty expensive/scarce on most EVs don't they? I'd be tempted to hire a dedicated AWD on trips rather than buy an AWD EV but I don't go offroad much.
Then again the dual and triple motor versions (AWD) of this https://www.tesla.com/en_au/cybertruck might be good for surf fishing...looks like a tinny anyway

And for those interested in the Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 your partner must be better at parking in the garage than mine-those aren't small and narrow cars!

There's quite a few of the Seat's floating around where I live. They look fantastic.

Pretty impressive customer service response from Cupra. the GM replied to my enquiry inside an hour. The Born will be launched her about the same time as in Oz. Pricing and details later in the year.

I don't mind it, because I won't be looking at those headlights when I'm rock climbing silently past a bunch of over-revving Hiluxes or dragging off everyone at the lights 😉

Nobody’s going to be dragging at the lights as they'll be too busy laughing that somebody bought such an ugly car …

fingers crossed for you both it actually arrives by year-end. And that you like it (nb there are UK reviews of it, most compare it favourably to the ID3 but there are some quirks). Mechanically I don't think it is a performance monster at all but that might not be an issue (personally I don't need Tesla-level acceleration). Dealer support/parts in NZ/Oz might be a concern too, even if supported by mother VW, and I wonder what the warranty might be.
