What are you listening to, right now................

Not a 'listening to' but for anyone interested in the production side of music this is a good read.

Deep Purple doing a fantastic rendition of the song that should have been far more famous than Smoke on the Water. Richie,Jon and Ian in particular absolutely nail it…..
I also love the stiff upper lip British restraint in the crowd, like a bunch of corpses….

I like that 80’s trilogy. Belew’s lyrics notwithstanding. Discipline is all-great. Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair have really good moments, but as a whole are weaker. You can burn a pretty good 80-min cdr comp from them. I’m a little biased. I saw the Discipline tour, Three of a Perfect Pair tour, and Thrak tour. Three of a Perfect Pair is not a remarkable album, but that concert easily makes my list of Top 5 all-time shows, and it wasn’t just the acid.

I did once see Fripp play a solo show of Frippertronics in the early/mid 80s, just him seated on a stool with his guitar and a reel-to-reel on a chair next to him. He played for an hour, I sat feet away directly in front of him and was completely hypnotized. I have very few correspondences from musicians, but he wrote me a lovely handwritten letter about 25 years ago that I treasure and invited me to visit him in New York, and sadly could not make it. (I’d written him about his solo “Blessing of Tears” album, and the accompanying long essay about the death of his mother. The album is 8 live versions essentially of the same song, but is so sad & beautiful, powerful and moving it feels like one long piece. It’s a fucking epic recording.)
