Die Hard is awesome. Brilliant movie on many levels (action, comedy, romance, Christmas!) . But it's a standard genre done great.

Pulp Fiction was ground breaking. I remember walking out of it at Uni and thinking "what the fuck did I just watch?". Multiple rewatches followed, and it gets better the more you watch it.

Absolute classic movie, up there with The Matrix.

Yeah the first of it’s type really ( well, I suppose Reservoir Dogs was but PF is better )

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many imitators, has to be said that Guy Ritchie did a fucken good job with Lock Stock and Snatch though. Some of the others were very try hard and embarrassing.

Memento was great in the screw-with-the-order genre

Still Nolan's best movie for me.

    Heat

    Robert De Niros best movie.

    Al Pacino best movie.

Val Kilmers best movie ( ok maybe this isn’t saying as much )

    Everyone else’s best movie too.

Just awesome in every single way, sooooooo good to watch every now and again. Compelling characters, tight direction, awesome action……it’s really got everything.

What a flick. Hard to believe its getting on 30 odd years.

For those wondering why Bruce Willis was pumping out B/C-grade movies in recent years, he was obviously cashing in while he could.

They left out his best movie which is undoubtedly Pulp Fiction.

Pulp was great. But are you forgetting a certain Die Hard movie?

I always thought Willis was a terrific actor who was just great to watch on the screen and really underrated for his acting skills. Incredibly versatile too.

Legend (the one about the Kray Twins) was in that genre - but based on a true story. Epic film.

I would say could sometimes be a good actor, but for each really good performance there would be another 3 that we’re basically him playing his Bruno persona. Don’t get me wrong, some of those were still good films but not necessarily him being a great actor. Might be considered heresy on here but I’d put the Die Hard films in that category.

Then there is his latter output…

Fair points. He allowed himself to let himself become rather stereotyped, but he still was a bloody fine actor and when he stretched himself in films like Moonrise Kingdom, 12 Monkeys and Sixth Sense, showed what he could do and cut it with the best of them. Huge range too.

Now I know about his medical condition, I can forgive his recent film crapola a little.

Not for me. The dude was the star of the best movie as all time. As much as I love Heat it's not The Godfather level for me.

I haven't seen Moonrise Kingdom but really enjoyed the other two. I watched 12 Monkeys with some trepidation as at the time I was a bit tired of Bruce's wise-cracking persona and also thought Brad Pitt was a bit of a lightweight. However, great film.

Yeah his condition explains much but to give him a complete pass you'd need to see a diagnosis going back a good few years!

    Agreed

And Godfather II, Casino, Goodfellas, Midnight Run, Cape Fear, Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, King of Comedy, Raging Bull, Bang The Drum Slowly all better for De Niro

    Tombstone for Kilmer

So anyway, to sum up I think we can say Heat is slightly underrated and the rest are slightly overrated.

Who is underrating Heat? One poster slightly overrated Heat. 😉 But other than it's all good.

@MiketheSnow's list shows that De Niro has been in some bloody awesome movies (and The Deer Hunter).

Heat is well rated here I think it is up there with De Niros very best work although popular opinion and the Oscars seems to disagree with me….hence I still consider it underrated for what I think is a masterpiece of a film.

Despite the fact I’ve gone off him a bit on account of his out of touch Trump rants RDN has been in some absolutely awesome flicks.

Two not mentioned are his turn as Al Capone in The Untouchables and the one starring opposite a young Leonardo De Caprio, This boys life….brilliant in both.

Casino and Cape Fear were a bit stock standard for me, nothing too exceptional. I wouldn’t mind seeing Raging Bull again to see what I make of him in that.

He was also surprisingly hilarious in Meet the Parents as well.

De Niro has been exceptional in my time - Heat is one of his best, along with The Deer Hunter, He is a natural before the camera and barking mad off it. Perfect as Father Bobby in Sleepers, with Jean Reno in Ronin, The Score, Godfather II - so many good films. He ended up needing such success, his greedy ex missus had him lined up for the kill! - they are good at that, eh?

I am similarly taken with Al Pacino. Him with De Niro in Heat is as good as it gets, that great movie was made for them. I don't think Pacino has appeared in a poor movie. To the degree that I know anything about these blokes, off screen Pacino does seem to be sane and well behaved.

You do get some pleasant surprises - I used think weird-in-public Sean Penn must find his work in Corn Flakes packets, having never seen him in anything, 😁 until my baby daughter wanted me to see Thin Red Line with her. Well, Penn was just outstanding! Not long after I saw him in Carlito's Way with Pacino, same thing, and again in Mystic River, a virtuoso performance.
