These internet warriors that jump on their keyboards and say things like "I don't know what the big deal is", "she was just a newsreader" and "it's not like she's dead FFS", all the while fighting back the tears, are the people that will need the most support in the long run. They're not allowing themselves to grieve.

And FFS once again John Key has shown himself to be a heartless bastard - why has he not set up a Hilary Barry support line yet? Must be too busy pandering to the rich...

or making himself aware of these rather complex money laundering trusts where they are apparently routed through several trusts in multiple countries, and linked to an ex-leader of another country, holed up apparently safe from extradition in the UK, all stuff he really should be aware of and on top of well before these Panama papers...slacker!

This article here really really really fucks me off.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11647956

Headline - New Mum forced out of hospital, wanted extra night due to not being mentally ready and previous bouts of PND.

Facts - public hospital, not private, so reality is they tell you when you go home, you aren't paying, you don't get what you want. It's also snuck in down the bottom that she didn't disclosed she previous had PND. The staff allowed her to stay on longer than was required, gave her access to a consultand and provided family with a place to stay.

New Mum claims that "they need to let the mother decide when she's ready to go."

That is utter horseshit. Medical professionals (who are given ALL OF THE FACTS) decide when they are ready to go. This isn't a hotel service which you are paying for, the state is.

People like that have no fucking perspective whatsoever. Her husband was "too busy" to pick her and baby up so she expects them to keep the ward open for her? As one of the people commenting on the article suggested, that's fine as long as she foots the bill.

And she actually thinks she shouldn't have to tell the medical staff that she had PND after previous births? She has to be taking the piss..

How do stories like that even make the media? I assume she went crying to them for some attention and they thought "hey we can spin this into a bit of click bait".

A bit harsh on the parents - I guess a moment's inattention and you don't expect to look up and find your kid has jumped in with the gorilla. Though I'm not sure where god being awesome fits into the story. Not very awesome if you're the gorilla.

Once the kid's in there though, the zoo's got no real option than to shoot first and ask questions later.

Moral of the story - if you're a gorilla and a kid jumps in your cage - kill it before the men with guns arrive and then sit there looking peaceful and eating a banana.

Yeah - it was the part about thanking god for what was a shitty situatuon all round that led me to the conclusion that the parents are complete fucking idiots. Still, I think it took more then just a moments inattention - witnesses said she was looking after multiple kids so likely lost track of his whereabouts until she saw him with the Gorilla.

My facebook feed has been full of dumbass do gooders saying to tranqualize the ape, cos y'know, they're clearly experts on getting the exact dose right to put something that size to sleep peacefully and without a fuss.

As I myself just said on facebook, right decision made, can't compare human life to animal life, even feral families. I'm against the idea of Apes and other large animals in zoos but I think the zoo itself needs to be accountable cos as someone said on the previous page you can never underestimate the combination of youthful ignorance combined with inbred stupidity.

Yeah - you don't have time to fuck around agonizing over decisions in that situation. You don't shoot the gorilla and he dismembers the kid you're in a power more shit than using the rifle.

Very unfortunate for the gorilla who's basically collateral damage.

I had the good luck (or otherwise) 🙂 to spend a couple of years living in Rome a few years ago. One of the most interesting things to do there, once the novelty of the ruins wore off, was go to the zoo. Was a lesson in how divorced from nature most people are (in NZ we are less so than most of the developed world, I suspect).

One time, I saw a girl slip under the railings with a small stick, poke it through the bars of a bobcat's cage and scuff it on the floor like you'd play with a kitten. Weird thing was - it was kind of mesmerising. The bobcat dropped down in an attack crouch, wiggling its hindquarters and staring at the girl. I just sort of stood there for a couple of seconds processing, "Jesus Christ".

And then the bobcat launched itself at her face.

Luckily it clanged against the bars. She fell back over the railings. And everyone shrieked and wailed and ran to pick her up.

Then I wandered over to where the Italians were throwing peanuts at the lions.

Yeah electricity has this ability to travel through a gorilla to the child it's holding onto!

was citing it as an option, saying could it be an option to immobilise a gorilla, obviously not an option while holding a toddler...that said, the voltage required to immediately immobilise an ape might be sufficient to kill it anyway, rendering my initial question pointless, which was just pondering as an alternative to needing to shoot it dead, not the answer to this situation.

Far worse than the ape story is the recent one where a naked dude intent on suicide jumped into a lion's enclosure and starting antagonising them - to rescue him, they shot both lions dead.

As for the whinging mother, fuck off, lady. As someone else said, a hospital is not a hotel. Unless you are recovering from a bad birth or c-section, there is no reason to stay and take a bed from an actual sick person. (If the mother decided when she left hospital, half of them would probably never leave.)
