    Firm selections for this season:

    1 Hodgman
    2 Taukei'aho
    3 Tu'ungafasi

    9 Smith
    10 B Barrett

    13 Ioane
    14/15 Jordan
15 J Barrett (or is it at 12?)

Lock is wide open, as are the loose forwards. Clarke is very close to being a lock at 11. Reece will get game time. 12 is the remaining question in the backs.

Form locks this year are arguably Lord and Goodhue. I don't expect them to start or make the 23 though.

@kirwan Haha, I love Blues fans going from almost suicidal a few years ago to arrogant after their first win over the Crusaders in many years.

Started a game at the WC as you mentioned.

Playing 1st 5 against Namibia is probably similar to playing there in an NPC game. Remember that TJP later played at 1st 5 in the same game.

I’m not arguing for him to play there?

I'm seriously worried about our playmakers.

Both BB and RM last night showed serious flaws for test level. BB still relies on moments of brilliance (as does RM) but showed zero tactical awareness and control. I'm not just talking about the last 10 minutes either. When he did try to play tactically his skills (in particular kicking from hand) really let him down.
RM just isn't up to it defensively and if you can't hide him (or the opposition seek him out) it is 2019 semifinal all over again.

I wonder if leaving RM to defend at 10 like they did with first fives with similar issues back in the day would still work in the modern game. At least he would have other players around him to help out. When you hide him on the wing (for example) and the opposition 'find' him he is pretty much on his own.

Like Barrett B? He was an absolute liability when he came onto the scene, missed some absolute sitters and was seen as a turnstile in defence. Credit to him, he's improved massively, and it's just not an issue any more. RM not so much.

Thing is, if you play RM at 10, you probably can't carry DH at 12. It'd suit more of a JB player; I like BB to start, and RM to finish (with Barrett covering 15 in case of injury)

RM would make me nervous as a finisher. I can see him trying too hard to make an impression.

                I wasn't suggesting you were.

I'd be happy to see JB given a go at 2nd 5 as well. There is the potential to have a much better, and more dangerous, backline than last year if the right players are chosen.

One thing I am pretty certain is having Mounga and Havili both start for the ABs would be a mistake.
Both are jinky players with little direct running ability and both (especially Mounga) aren't the greatest defenders.

(which means Foster has them as the first names on the team sheet)

                    1. Aaron
                    2. Beaudy
                    3. Clarke

                    5. Rieko
                    6. Reece
                    7. Jordan

That's a starting backline I want to see. Power, size, speed and elusiveness. Reece is easily the best right wing in New Zealand. Jordan is too good not to start at fullback where he can get more opportunities. Clarke is the form left winger. Rieko is the form centre and has pace to burn. Aaron's pass can ensure Beaudy can run into space and if he needs to bail out, Jordie has the size and skillset to get over the advantage line.

As I've written earlier in this thread, it's all about balance and whichever players complement each other and gel best.

I'd like to see in at least one test a 10-12-13 trio of Mo'unga, Havili and Fainga'anuku. I don't care whether that's as the starting trio or for a significant part of the second half, but I think it's worth seeing how that goes in a test match. It worked a treat in the Crusaders win over the Chiefs.

RM and Havilli are poor on defence at super level, so playing them together at the level above is not a great idea.

And against a willing defence LM was pretty anonymous. RI has been streets ahead of him at 13 and CC ahead of him at 11. I’d have him in the squad ahead of Ennor though.

                                    That makes sense.

@kirwan LF played mostly on the wing; I'm suggesting they try them together at 10-12-13 (as in the Chiefs v Crusaders game, and where they finished last night). When they started ringing in the changes in the second half, and he moved to the midfield, the Crusaders started playing much better, including all the players I mentioned.

At the next level, I believe Rieko has cemented his place at 13, which means we need the right 12 for him, not the right 13 to make RM and Havili work.

We'd still need Rieko's pace to cover their defence...
