The guy was class when not injured. It’s not as if he was a journeyman filling a gap in the squad or a Hail Mary selection like the majority of that list.
If you can’t recognise class on the field that’s your problem

No unluckier than any number of others on the list.

I'm disappointed to see Hungus Masaga on that list, I thought he didn't pass the ball in more tests than that.

TBH. we could make a decent enough team from that lot. Not world beating but would retain the Bledisloe.

Unlucky probably isn’t the best term. Of all of those players there aren’t many that I reckon would have had a decent AB career had it not been for injuries/illness/established good players in front of them.
Ngatai, Reihana and Vidiri probably in a different category to the majority. Then there is the “unknown” of Reagan King. Right circumstances and who knows how that boy would have done. He certainly looked to have huge potential if handled right.

Agree on Afeaki as well.

Yeah see I’d label Vidiri the unluckiest by far given he’d have absolutely walked into the ABs in 1996 if eligible and terrorised international defences like he did at Super level. By the time he got a shot his health was failing.

Reihana also given he couldn’t get past the other brilliant back three players consistently enough. I always thought he would have done better given his utility value, still at least he got capped, Roger Randle didn’t !

Loads of the others were “good” and a few perhaps lucky they even got one or two caps.

Bovidae

It's a little unfair to include players from the amateur era in that list, as they often played a larger number of games for the ABs but didn't have the advantage of being able to come on as a substitute in tests unless there was an injury.

From memory seemed like he was always on the edge of selection or thereabouts but not quite there

Dan, he was a great first five from memory. Had a lot of fun in that Whangarei Bears tournament.

@chimoaus he was, IIRC he also played at Marist U18 (same time as Jason Shoemark and Derren Whitcombe I think) when I was in seniors, I played schoolboy rugby with Mark.

I didn't look at every position. But, I'd play Hill over Cameron. At least there'd be solidity in the tackle.

My XV (as they're all much of a muchness my selection policy is Magpies and people I know personally first):
Reihana/Cashmore, Vidiri, Maori Jesus, Ranby, Berryman, Hill, Lee, Turner, Vanisi, MacDonald, B Evans, Gordon, Afeaki, Parsons, Purvis.

On second thoughts I think the Bled is heading to Oz.

Then it would be G Evans in to replace him due to my selection policy.

TBH, I don't really hold that against Turner, in those days he had to move to further his career. There was no Hurricanes to overlook him or Chiefs, MP and Highlanders to pick him up.
