“We were talking about championships before we even got to a playoff,” Smith said. “But that doesn’t buy you a championship.

“...it wasn’t built through hard work and trust and selflessness and doing your job creates a try for others, or wanting to tackle for your mate.

“Or were they [the All Blacks] just counting their money? Were they here just to get a bonus cheque and get ready for the All Blacks, some of them?

“It’s hard to say, but that’s what I saw.”

Smith also pointed to rancorous parties after the season had finished, when ill-feeling that had been building up within the squad exploded.

“There were fights,” Smith said. “You shouldn’t fight your team-mates. That’s one sign I knew there was poison.”

From that viewpoint, he could see the unhappiness building, and said that “double standards” started to creep in when the Highlanders’ All Blacks weren’t being pulled up by the coaches for errors in the same way that younger players were.

@Kiwiwomble yeah the big party at Haskell's was pretty crazy. Dunno if you've read about it or anything, Lima went deep about it on a podcast I heard.

@Tim At Super Rugby level, Harmon and G. Evans aren't limited players. I'd say they are very handy players at this level. Both very injury prone though. And Evans is 30 years old now, so may be looking at a stint overseas.

Yeah Harmon is excellent, he's quite a bit more traditional openside than most - not quite test level good, but better than the likes of Choat, Lentjes, Gibson...

just listening to the solomon alaimalo one, interesting to hear he did get back to the point where he could train with the injured guys, thats good, really sounds like he'd just missed too much to force out one of the other guys rather than still really struggling

...also interesting he seemed to struggle to remember how many siblings he had!

@Kiwiwomble Yeah, I posted that in the match thread. Was a bit surprised to read that. Was wondering whether travellers still have to go into quarantine when they arrive in Japan ...

No, for travelers from NZ who are tripled vaxxed.

with Sio gone & I reckon punivai probably won't be back why don't we try & lure down Gideon Wrampling from the chiefs? There he's behind Tupaea, ALB, Nankivell ect but in a landers jersey he would be in the 23 from the get go

I'm thinking about starting a Givealittle for Nasi to get a nose job.

Long time since I posted in here, think I’ve lost my will to live after watching the Highlanders the last 2 seasons.

Will be interesting to see who the coaching set up is. The success of the 2015 season was built on culture and having a staff who was strong and represented that - followed by players who brought in.
This year the honest fact is we just don’t have the x - factor we had in pass one a Naholo, Fekitoa… we hit the jackpot with these guys who where fringe players in other franchise but seemed to be lured down by Joseph.

Yes, that's very tedious. And not every guest can be a good bastard. The other bone I have to pick with the podcast is that there's a lot of assumed knowledge - especially when he's talking to former team mates and they use nicknames for other players and the poor listener has no idea who they're talking about because James doesn't explain, when a good host should.

Then again, the latest one with Ajeet Rai was excellent, even though they'd never met before.

@Kiwiwomble What a Lad podcast hosted by James Marshall. Pretty decent tbh.

after 4 episode i am well and truly over the "lad" stuff

Yes, that's very tedious. And not every guest can be a good bastard. The other bone I have to pick with the podcast is that there's a lot of assumed knowledge - especially when he's talking to former team mates and they use nicknames for other players and the poor listener has no idea who they're talking about because James doesn't explain, when a good host should.

Then again, the latest one with Ajeet Rai was excellent, even though they'd never met before.

so i listened to the Lima one to hear about that 2013 party, solomon alaimalo as mentioned, denny solomona for obvious reasons (he seemed like a bit of a dick if im honest) and now elliot dixon just to hear what he says about that try...but then im done i think

@Kiwiwomble Dixon was good value but yes, I'd space them out. Bigger fan of Between Two Beers - better variety of guests too.
