What's less ideal is playing two power wingers.

i reckon that thinking is 5 years out of date

and i would struggle to call many of those blokes "power" wingers. The only power winger is also really good under the high ball.

The way the ABs set up defensively we tend to drop our 1st 5 back to help with the kick reception plus to get 3 or even 4 players behind the ball to counter from. So you want strong attackers out wide, and for me it doesn’t matter whether they get over the gain line by tackle busts or beating their man by stepping or outside pace. Either creates opportunities.

I think the whole Dagg/Mils, Dagg/Bender, Jane, Jordie etc was more about getting the best players on the field and then having the gameplan that those players with their skill sets could execute.

Henry didn’t mind the Rok/Sivi combo from time to time either.

Didn't that combo lose more than it won? Losses to RSA and France?

I think balance is pretty vital. Players who are big and explosive just aren't going to be able to cover the same ground. Aren't going to be able to get behind the ball to counterattack (as regularly) if they're gassed from the previous play etc

The team that runs on the field Saturday may differ from the team named on Thursday.

Is that when the team is named? Thanks, I was about to ask.

      Yes Named on Thursday.

      You do know don't you?

@Chris I think we both agree. But Reiko is not a punch the line guy. So who’s going to take that part? For me then Caleb Clark sure, and then who else in the backs?

@Chris he is the guy for me and Caleb if fit, that break defences. Then. You play off 9 and 10 and around the ruck with Fukutava, and now you question the rush defence

                      First post here on SF btw. So far not ideal preparation but hopefully the situation can galvanise us. Given the forwards at this stage are in effected, I would go with a backline of;

                      1. A Smith
                      2. B Barrett
                      3. C Clarke
                      4. Q Tupaea
                      5. R Ioane
                      6. S Reece
                      7. J Barrett

                      Bench:
                      Fakatava, M’unga, Fainga’anuku

Pretty decent and plenty of go forward

Sometimes when players get thrown together, or in at the deep end, due to unexpected circumstances it takes the pressure off, they can relax a bit and perform really well.

There's been quite few identified wingers that have failed to fire over the last few years or haven't impressed enough yet to get excited about. ENS, Fihaki, Kini Naholo, Nareki, Dawai, Tikoisolomone, Narawa, Rayasi...

You'd think that out of all those names someone would be setting the world alight. Maybe there is something in coaching tactics not allowing wings to be wings.

Telea is about the only other wing in the country I'd have near the ABs at the moment.

We had a period against the French where we fucking dominated by using our big ball runners like Samisoni up the middle with pick & go's etc before going wide. Got us right back into the game when we were done for all money, and into a position where we should have won. It was so different to the way we had played all season it made me wonder at the time if the players, particularly the forwrds, just shelved the over complicated game plan and took matters into their own hands.

It completely nullified the rush defense as it's extremely difficult to rush up when your forwards are on the back foot, and it showed that we absolutely do have the cattle to win those exchanges with the right tactics.

It's a simple game plan, but extremely difficult to counter even if you know it's coming.

Yup. Spot on and I can recall that happening in a few other games as well.

But then the players lost a bit of precision, made mistakes and we were on the back-foot again. We need to up our concentration and cut back on the mistakes.

Very unfortunate. Not a bad player and in this squad would probably be the reserve lock for the test matches as he was in the big 6Ns games.

                                      Ireland’s most powerful lock.

@The-Docter Hey Doc, welcome to the Fern.

In just 9hrs of Ferning you've made a bunch of decent points and about 17 spelling mistakes.

I reckon you'll fit in well around here.

He’s a starter with Ryan in the normal run of things. Was injured at start of 6N. Serious blow for the squad.
