@junior If you had told people in advance that we'd get a red and two yellows in the second test, there would have been plenty betting on green after the dubious first test performance.

I was more alluding to the fact that we got so comprehensively outplayed in the next two tests - getting beaten, sure, we could see that as a possibility. But, getting so comprehensively dicked... I honestly did not see that coming.

I think we were outplayed in the first test, despite the scoreline. No possession, no territory. Ireland made a few mistakes and we took advantage.
Given the cards, and them tightening up their mistakes, I was surprised we got as close as we did in test 2.
As soon as we tried to take the points early in the third, I thought it was obvious we were going down.
If our aim is to play a high speed game and rely on individual brilliance and we aren't capable of playing territory and possession then we can't go into our shell. Our defence means we need to score 20-30 points to be competitive, and we are not going to achieve that from penalties because we are shit at territory and possession and are simply not going to get enough of those opportunities. We need to score in multiples of 7, and not be scared of having a crack - or change our entire approach to the game. I guess in that sense we did try to change things, just in a really dumb way.

That decision actually raises an interesting point: were the team under directions to take the 3 when on offer, or did Cane decide that on the spot because he has lost faith with the 'system'?

I disagree. Test rugby is about scoring from opportunities. Modern defences mean it's hard to score tries (except sometimes against us :P), so I am a fan of taking the likely 3, rather than a possible 5/7.

Take the three, get the ball back and go down again and do it again. If we got to 20 points, we very very used to lose; just get points any way you can

@nzzp which made us turning down points deep into the 2nd test more frustrating, but we went for 7 and failed.

Sometimes it can just settle things down, get people back into thier zones, captain gets a chance to have a chat, emaphasise roles, any weaknesses someone has seen.

I know JB had missed a similar one earlier, but our lineout had been struggling too...

Yeah that was mentioned on Sunday. It's a temporary move according to Foster

So that suggests another specialist coach coming on, or Schmidt might be able to take over the backs after the tour

He won't confirm that another coach is being sought which is fair enough if they are recruiting behind the scenes. I think Foster said the other day that Schmidt is staying backroom but is starting to plan things in the backs in a more strategic way. Another coach would need to be happy to be Joe's facilitator.

@Machpants a few amusing bits, but this was probably the best

But the resilient coach is not downcast. “The players back me,” he explained, “especially the ones who the media are saying are past it. As we set off for our tests against Namibia, Burkina Faso and Cameroon, we will do our very best to make the country proud. We have some new blood in the form of a highly competent new forwards coach, and even brand new All Blacks official mascots – two cuddly little scapegoats called Plummy and Mooary.”

Normally I would agree with you, but the way NZ teams have been exiting lately it's easier said than done. It's another area where we seem to be struggling - at Super and test level.

Take the three, get the ball back and go down again and do it again. If we got to 20 points, we very very used to lose; just get points any way you can

Normally I would agree with you, but the way NZ teams have been exiting lately it's easier said than done. It's another area where we seem to be struggling - at Super and test level.

kick off to our 22, wait for the ineffective box kick at half way. attack again

Or kick it slightly deeper and we hit it up one off from the ruck a couple of times before passing it to one of our pop gun punters who will put it out just past the 22, or not find touch at all.

He handled that very well. A simple response that would’ve taken the journo by surprise.
