Saw Moon tonight. Interesting concept and set up but not very well executed. Acting was fine but the story was developed without any suspense.

6/10.

Watched 'Anvil, the story of Anvil' last night and it was a great watch.

At fourteen, they made a pact to rock together forever. They meant it.

A story of a Canadian Heavy Metal band that never quite made it. Although they are revered by a number of other metal bands they never got the record deal that would have made them famous. The two protagonists are Lips the lead singer and Rob Reiner the drummer (said to be one of the best drummers in metal), they are two down to earth guys chasing their dream. Now both in their 50's they are still rocking as hard as ever. An excellent movie and I would rate it a 9/10

Mrs Meldrew suggested we watch "Il y a longtemps que je t'aime" or "I Have Loved You so Long" with Kristin Scott Thomas. Thought it was a French Chic-flick but was seriously hooked from the first 5 minutes. Not a thriller or historical drama or anything I'd normally watch but a well-told story of the relationship between two sisters in Nancy (without giving too much away). Elsa Zylberstein (who I'd never heard of) was outstanding. 9/10 and poss. the best film I've seen in a while.

Knowing with Nicholas Cage. Have steered clear of any film with him for a while after teh deadful "Wicker Man", but this was a good film. Which could have been a great film if the ending wasn't so bloody saccharin... 6.5/10

I haven't seen it yet, but am looking forward to it (I posted a trailer several pages & months ago). Those guys have played in local strip-mall bars to half-empty rooms (and believe me, these are very small rooms) in neighbourhoods where I live in Southern Ontario for years. They still go around and staple cheap photocopy fliers for their shows onto street poles, and although I have never met them I'm pretty stoked that their perserverence has been acknowledged and the doc has been overwhelmingly well received by the critics.

    Saw Transformers 2 last night.

It was enjoyable, but not as good as the first one. Too much fill-in crap, the movie could have been half an hour longer.

Lots of shit gets shot and blown up (good), couple too many cartoonish characters (not so good) heaps of eye candy (Megan Fox is fairly gratuitous throughout, and Cairns girl Isobel Lucas gets to act all slutty and look hot).

Overall i give it a pass, but unlike the first, i am not itching to see it again, and it won't be added to the DVD collection, and the thought of a thrid doesn't excite me a great deal (although i will go see it).

For All Mankind - HD reissue from Criterion of a great documentary about the Apollo missions to the moon. Amazing use of the archive footage to create a beautiful experience. Brian Eno music used for the score. 9/10. Great way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of man setting foot on the moon.
I watched it tonight. I was familiar with the Eno soundtrack, but had never seen the film before. I thought it was completely mesmerizing, agree it's 9/10 (at least). I'll buy it, many repeat viewings in there.
Great to hear you really enjoyed. Thought the lift-off sequence was amazing.
I believe the same one is used in Koyanniskatsi (sp.?).
BTW, you wouldn't know where I could get a decent copy of Joshua Then and Now, would you?
The film adaptation, or the tv version? I can check with my mates who run a video store, they may be able to dub for me.

    Twilight.
Utter shit, but then I'm not a teenage girl.

But if I was to compare it to my memories of The Lost Boys - it wouldn't come close, no siree.

Plus there was way too much pale skin going on that I found off putting.

Public Enemy--the story of Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger. Johnny Depp plays Dillinger. Directed by Michael Mann, of Miami Vice fame. Very enjoyable and a look at what a real economic meltdown actually looked like. Worth going to see if you have the opportunity.
Appaloosa - a western with Ed Harris, Viggo Mortinsen and Renee Zellwegger. If you like Westerns I recommend this. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I will take your advice Jury, I've got this one on my hard drive and have been debating whether to watch it. I think old sour face Zellwegger puts me off - I used to find her attractive too.
Have you guys seen the trailer for the new Peter Jackson-produced Wingnut flick "District 9" by a young Saffer director named Neill Blomkamp?

Heavy street display promotion for the film on billboards and across bus-stops in Toronto.
This is getting some pretty good praise, supposed to be VERY violent in the second half.

RT, yea i saw the trailer for that, it looks seriously fucking cool.

Jury, i hadn't heard of Appaloosa, but it got a great review in Empire, and Mortenson generally doesn't appear in dross, so it may be on the cards for this weekend.

Yeah. I used to think she was as cute as a button. She plays an interesting role in this one. Don't want to spoil it for you, but I think she did a good job in this film. Her sour face actually works in this part. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

It's a little bit of a sedate pace and I think the cast was great. Even old Lance Hendrikson (sp) appears in it! There's just enough mean man stuff and character development to keep you interested. Not as fast paced as the 3.10 to Yuma (which I really liked and went out and bought), but I enjoyed it. Might go buy it so I can watch it again sometime.

I read a couple months ago that Mortenson has quietly retired from film-acting, like, permanently. He seems like one of the very few Hollywood actors who you could believe might actually be seriously telling the truth; then again he's also a leg-puller.
