<p>How the hell did the Vale army get past Moat Cailin? Ramsey should have had troops there, we have been hearing about how it is impassable for years. No army has ever taken it from the south. Brienne would have had to ride past it too on her way south to Riverrun. Like the Bolton men would just wave her through? Yeah right. Actually, the whole travel thing gives me the shits. They ride around the whole of Westeros on horses ever 10 minutes, like it is no big thing or long distance.</p>

<p class=""><span>The reason Moat Cailin is so tough to penetrate from the south is that it forms a natural choke point that allows defenders to bottle-neck would-be invaders. Itâ€s also the only secure entry-way into the North without going through other parts of the swampy Neck. If, say, a Lannister army tried to march up the Moat Cailin causeway, itâ€d be open season on them, with the crannogmen shooting poisonous darts and otherwise making the effort a living hell. There is nothing inherently dangerous about going through Moat Cailin <i>if </i>you are on the side of the crannogmen who defend it, which they do because the Neck is their territory and because they are pro-Stark. In theory a friendly army could walk right through it from the south if they wanted, which Iâ€m guessing is what happened with the Vale knights: The crannogmen knew or figured out that the Vale knights were going north to help, and let them pass.</span></p>

<p class=""><span>Moat Cailin itself is not usually manned, but can be during wartime. There are three towers still standing, and attacking any one of them at once leaves a force vulnerable to attacks from the other two. In the books the ironborn were able to take it <i>from the north, </i>but suffered immensely in doing so, thanks to the crannogmen. Robbâ€s plan was to get help from the crannogmen and retake Moat Cailin from the north, not the south. In the books, Moat Cailin must fall to Ramsay Bolton from the north (when Theon negotiates its surrender) before the Bolton army, including Roose, can re-enter the North. On the show, Roose himself is able to steal into the North but still must retake the castle before the rest of his force can enter. (You might ask why the crannogmen let the obviously enemy Bolton army re-enter the North; I think in the books theyâ€re letting them re-enter in order to trap them in the North later, and I think the show is just ignoring it altogether.)</span></p>

<p class=""><span>So: The Vale knights were able to get past/through/to Moat Cailin because the crannogmen let them do so.</span></p> -

<p>Other half picked up a plothole though, Sansa had fucked off by the time Ramsay mentioned he hadn't fed the dogs in seven days so wouldn't have heard him say it. It's highly doubtful any of the others mentioned it to her in passing. Rickons death was beyond fucken stupid, MN5s better half thought he was gonna set the dogs on him. That would have been more plausible than hitting a target fucken miles away with a longbow. Sure those things were ruthless in the middle ages when a shitload of blokes used them at masses of people but no way in a million fucken years one guy could hit a slightly built teen who was running ( and should have been zig zagging ).</p>

<p>Those that reckon Wun Wun could have dealt to them himself with armour and a club/axe are missing the point that whoever he didn't charge through could easily get him on the flanks so perhaps his battle tactics weren't quite as bad as initially thought and they needed him for the gate at any rate so he needed to stay alive and in some regards fight almost cautiously. Mind you when they were being hemmed in why didn't Ramsay shoot the big guy in the head from the comfort of his horse away from the battle since he's such an amazing shot ?</p>

<p>Someone on a previous page compared the scrap to Saving Private Ryan, very apt. It is AS GOOD as anything you'll see in any movie. That bit where you think Jon Snow is toast but then his cavalry hit Ramsays at precisely the right moment is fucken spine tingling.</p>

<p>I enjoyed the chat between Thommond and Ser Davos. Good to see them put aside their differences for a common enemy. As I said, after Bronn and the Hound those two are right up there as characters. I hope them and Jon all sat down for some sows milk after the fight, by Christ they earned it.</p> -

<p>This isn't the middle ages. There's already precedents that these guys are significantly better shots than earthborn humans. The Blackfish casually put a flaming arrow into a boat as it was going round the corner of a river and that guy from the brotherhood made shots that would have tested Robin Hood and William Tell.</p> -

Hopefully the final episode will be a great follow up to this one, in its favour is that it has the same Director.<br><br>

<p>Go back to when he threw Lysa Arren out the moonhole. He said, "I've only ever loved one woman - your sister".</p>

<p>LF's got a fair slate of pretty nasty dealings racked up, Baron. I think he's a definite bad guy and given the number of the worst that have departed it seems a reasonable bet that he'll step up in the next seasons.</p> -
