@Kruse said in The hot takes and unpopular opinions:

    Robin Williams

    • Never thought he was funny
    • Just an early version of Jim Carrey. Screwing up one's face and making funny voices - does not a comic make.

    Nick Cave

    • Pretentious - yes - but not sure it's a particularly hot take... pretty much been his persona, with the Bad Seeds at least,
    • But - fucking good. I get that some people don't like his music, but...
    • One of the best live performers I've ever seen
    • Somehow, he takes one of his "dirges", and transforms it into a stadium anthem. I fucking like his stuff, but still don't understand how he does that

    Friends

    • Again - I don't think any dislike of this is a particularly hot take
    • It is the epitomy of mainstream low-risk low-reward US sitcom
    • It is the Butter Chicken of sitcoms.

    John Cleese

    • Not sure I've seen, heard of, definitely not paid any attention to - any of his stuff since Wanda
    • So - happy to take the Fern consensus, and not go searching for any of it

    British Comedy Panel-Shows

    • Have I Got News For You - is terrible. Only ever redeemed by getting somebody amusing as a guest host.
    • Most of the others - I actually enjoy. Sure - they're a bit hit-and-miss, which one would expect due to the format.
    • Mock The Week is vastly funnier than HIGNFY for "current events"
    • 8 out of 10 Cats was good, and 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown works surprisingly well mostly (except for the "wacky skits")
    • Would I Lie To You was usually good - especially whenever Bob Mortimer was involved. The fucking anecdotes that guy has.
    • TaskMaster - had its moments.
    • Oh - and I was going to say I really miss Never Mind the Buzzcocks - but see they've revived it. Sweet.

I’m speaking ill of the dead I know but I could never stand this kinda shit from Robin Williams.

But still, he was better at what he did than Nick Cave.

I've never watched an episode of Friends. That show would be on a list of "popular" TV shows I've never seen, or had any interest in.

As to the British comedy panel shows, I'm a fan of QI, although the most recent series (Q-S) haven't been shown in NZ.

Friends was great for what it was. Millions of fans can't all be totally wrong. But I much prefer vindaloo to butter chicken.

I never enjoyed Robin Williams as a comic, though he was great in Good Will Hunting and GMV.

    No opinion on Nick Cave.

Liked Faulty Towers (noting it'd never get nade these days), never got into Monty Python though.

QI was great. Would I Lie to You is awesome.

    Popular doesn't equal good. 🙂

Rolling Stone magazine recently released their Top 100 TV shows. The list includes series and talk shows, and is US-centric. Like all polls, I don't take these too seriously.

    The Top 10 was:

    1. The Sopranos
    2. The Simpsons
    3. Breaking Bad
    4. The Wire
    5. Fleabag
    6. Seinfeld
    7. Mad Men
    8. Cheers
    9. Atlanta
    10. The Mary Tyler Moore Show

@Bovidae The only 3 I enjoyed were Breaking Bad, The Wire and Fleabag. Surprised GOT was not in the top 10.

I found Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad to have some periods of tedium in them.

It was very clever, but the endless lawyerly yappings of Saul, and the whining teenage victim cries of Jesse Pinkman (How could you do this Walt??????) got a bit boring.

I've only seen 4 of the top ten (1, 3, 4, 8 ) in full, and a handful of episodes of two others (2, 6). A quick scan says ~25% of the 100.

    @Bovidae I've only seen all of 1 in that top 10, 3.

    Some of 2, 5, 6 and 8.

Never seen an ep of #1, watched the first 3 or 4 of #4 2 times, but didnt do it for me

I've seen him live. That was a good nap that one.

Although on @taniwharugby point, to be fair I wouldn't even know who he is if it wasn't for Kylie.

The potential future Mrs MN5 requested some on one of our very first long car rides.

I just about kicked her arse to the curb in the middle of no where right then and there.

Yeah and with BoB at 80, no True Detective and then you see some of the absolute dross in the top 50… credibility, where are you?

Breaking Bad doesn't edge my top 20 shows of all times, which is not to say I didn't enjoy watching it. However, I think it's very overrated and any list that puts it above The Wire is already null and void for me.

My ranking of their Top 10:

    1. The Wire
    2. Sopranos
    3. Mad Men
    4. Seinfeld
    5. Fleabag
    6. Breaking Bad
    7. Cheers
    8. Atlanta
    9. The Simpsons (Mid 90s would have been top 5).
    10. Mary Tyler Moore Show (Not seen enough to rate it).

@Catogrande said in The hot takes and unpopular opinions:

Da Fuq - top 5 for me.

    @Bovidae Interesting List

The only one I have watched is The Soprano's

I have caught occasional episodes of 2,6 and 10. Aware of their cultural significance but nver got into them. TV isn't really a big part of my life.

3, and 7 I tried to watch but found them all very predictable. Probably as I was watching some time later.

Never even heard of 5 or 9. I struggle to stick with series. Even ones that I have enjoyed I tend not to watch subsequent seasons. I think it must be that you have to invest in the characters and i struggle to do that with real people, let alone celluloid ones.

Polish chicks on the inter-web are obviously different.
