Margot Robbie is exceptionally hot ( looks nice with dark hair ).

How did I miss this, I was choosing between See How They Run and this film on Monday - this would have tipped the balance for me.

    Code Name: Banshee

    • Not great
    • I know it's all de rigeur to start an action/assassin movie off with action, and then let the "plot" be revealed later.
    • But... that works heaps better when there IS a plot. Or a comprehensible plot/back-story, at least. When you don't know what the back-story is, it's probably better to just tell it in a linear fashion, and figure it out yourself as you go.
    • Yeah... flashbacks, hinted-at-twists, but... I still have no idea what the backstory here really was. Who betrayed who? Was her daddy really a traitor? Is he actually still alive? Is there going to be a sequel? God forbid, is this going to be a franchise? Was this based on a "graphic novel"? (I can't be arsed looking that up... it was bad enough that could be)
    • Anyway - the "5 years later" story is simple enough....
    • female assassion, ex-CIA contra, blah blah blah, with zero charisma....
    • signature move - standing in the most exposed position available, holding two pistols out in front of her at head-height
    • Turns out Antonio Banderas was running a bit short of cash, so brought him in as the old mentor chap
    • gunfights ensue
    • tit-watch: does not ensue
    • more gunfights ensue, with the aid of Antonio's teenage daughter
    • some really nonsensical editing, and character decisions
    • (Lot's of "I need him/her alive, no matter what!" - and then firing guns willy-nilly in their direction, or straight-up point-blank into their face.)

2 "You're a shit female Olyphant/Hitman!" versing 5 "You were better in Sons-of-Anarchy!" heckling chants.

It’s definitely one that you can wait til it comes out on Netflix……no big explosions or massive action scenes.

It actually got a few really bad reviews but I liked it enough.

I don't really watch movies at home anymore unless they're streamer produced and don't go to the cinemas. Weirdly I often find it hard to concentrate on movies at home (no problem with TV bingeing though) these days.

Plus I'm not working at the moment so might go see it today or tomorrow.

@Nepia it's strange aye. I won't watch a movie at home because I don't want to commit to two hours in front of the tele, but I will happily spend three hours binging a series.

@MN5 I saw it this afternoon, and maybe because I had lowered expectations due to your comments and a podcast I heard discussing it, and I really enjoyed it. The only issue I had with it was the ending went a bit final Lord of the Rings movie of seemingly never ending.

I had read about the actual story it was loosely based on in the last year or so.

Yeah I think it’s better than the critics said.

Will definitely have another watch down the line.

Ready or Not (2019) with Samara Weaving and Adam Brody

Absolutely delicious black horror/comedy both original and satirical on the genre and the most enjoyable film I've seen this year. Think of a Taika Waititi version of a Midsomer Murders feature film but with more gore, violence and piss-taking and you'll get the picture. Bloody brilliant watch.

4.5 Hannibal Lectors out of 5 Jeffrey Dahmers

The BFI recently restored a "lost" British thriller that has a cult reputation. It was financed by the Coal Pension Board, and shot on 35 mm film for international TV and limited theatrical release, but only played at film festivals and sporadically on TV. There was a dodgy VHS release for a short time.

The film is The Appointment (1980, 1981, or 1982, depending on the source), stars Edward Woodward, and is kind of like a very British cross between Don't Look Now and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.

It is also excellent, and is a chilling atmospheric thriller, with some wonderful set pieces.

4.5/5, despite being sourced from a 1" broadcast tape.

The vanishing British horror: unearthing The Appointment

The vanishing British horror: unearthing The Appointment

The Wicker Man star Edward Woodward headlines this story of strange psychic forces from the start of the video nasty era. But since its release, The Appointment has been extremely difficult to see.

    The Appointment (1982) ⭐ 6.2 | Horror

    The Appointment (1982) ⭐ 6.2 | Horror

    1h 30m

Apparently it's available to stream from Apple and Amazon in the UK.

Just watched. Stunning. If ever a film deserved the title "lost masterpiece", this is it. And you have to wonder just how films like this actually get lost.

Brilliant directing, simple but breath-taking effects, clever editing and the music by Trevor Jones is superb. Doesn't keep you on the edge of your seat, but the way the atmosphere & mood builds is fantastic.

    5/5

For some reason, I'm watching a spate of gothic/weird family/haunted castle films and today it was The Invitation (2022).

Well put together, could have been great, but the clear (for me) references to wokeness took the edge off it. Still a fun watch though.

3.5 Monsters in the Basement out of 5 Ghosts in the Attic

    ##spoiler
I found the film's undercurrent obsession with race just dull and boring. Have no problems with characters casually talking about how white (or black) a person's skin is, but here it's overdone and detracts from the plot & film.

You get the sneaking suspicion the filmmakers saw this as an opportunity to show their woke/BLM credentials and get more than a few "white = bad" tropes in - as if real vampires give a fuck about skin colour

What I love most about the fern is it’s in depth analysis.

I feel like I don’t even need to bother seeing the film now 😉

I'm going to take the bait...

It's a recommendation from Mike (almost always worth checking out).and obviously not a review with deep analysis as there was no tit-watch index rating.

Black Adam - Pretty average. Personal preference but I prefer Marvel average to DC average. This one also seemed to have a Zac Snyder influence despite the fact he appears to have no role in it (and yes I'm not a fan of Snyder's work, and no I don't mind if others are, but not for me). At the start especially there was lots of slow-mo and dark CGI.

The Rock was his usual self, always watchable. The super team were all good (Pierce Brosnan, Aldos Hodge, two younger actors).

To ensure this is a credible mini analysis of the film, Titwatch = 0. It's a superhero film, what do you expect. But it does star Sarah Shahi so the hotness factor is high. But, she weirdly does a "foreign" accent but no other characters seem to do it either. The comedian Mo Amer plays her brother and just uses his normal accent.

Average but worth the $10 I paid to see it.
