Are we debating philosophy in this thread now, perhaps epistemology? If a stunningly good new player came along, how we would we know whether Foster was even able to recognise that the player was new and good rather than just new and inexperienced?

I am dreaming a little here but what if a lock bulked over summer, found their sweet spot size/performance wise then performed like a demon during Super? It could happen and could change the dynamic of the team as far as ball carrying and ruck cleaning went.

No chance Foster would pick him.

He couldn't even see who the best forward in his team was, and he was in the squad.

Sorry. Excuse the ignorance but please exploin...

Thanks. For a while I thought the reference was to Fester Ryan-Ooku.

all this chat of depth is so overrated. How many more players do we need?

Right now we have two guys who can play fullback to a decent level.
          3 really good wings.
1 nailed on centre, one guy who has played well there previously
3 guys who would do a good job at 12
          2 guys at 10
          2 guys at 9
8 is skinny, but Sotutu appears to have the tools
          2 guys at 7
2 guys at 6 and a lock who can go there too
          3 locks
Props appear to have the rotation sorted
Hooker has a genuine star to start and two guys with experience behind

That's a world cup squad nailed on. They also seem to know who the best 23 is. And the squad has guys who can slot in.

Generally what people mean is "we are running out of tests for my favourite players to get a run and prove to everyone that i knew best"

If he was rotating players every week people would be on here lamenting that "we are running out of tests to build combinations!! pick and stick!"

The team is what the team is going to be. If we lose a bunch of players at the same time we'll probably be fucked. But that is the same for every other side in world rugby.

(aside: the deepest World Cup squad ever assembled also got bundled out in the quarters in that country's worst ever result. depth is overrated)

There's also the 'irresistible form' possibility that Wayne Smith talked about the other day. He used Milner-Skudder as an example. Came out of the blue, right place, right time. Irresistible form and was a player of the tournament.

I am dreaming a little here but what if a lock bulked over summer, found their sweet spot size/performance wise then performed like a demon during Super? It could happen and could change the dynamic of the team as far as ball carrying and ruck cleaning went.

Interesting one, but it depends on the player position, I guess. A Lock would be great as we seem to have good cover with SB, SW & BBBR and that would slot right in, but if a demon 12 appeared during SR, that could poss. screw building midfield combinations pre-RWC2023.

Too difficult to get a midfielder up to speed on the plays. The amount of homework and studying these guys have to do to entrench patterns and roles is intense and an inexperienced player has no chance.
Not saying lock is easy but you could s nd a tyro out there with simple instructions and they would be effective. Wing is obviously another possibility

Good call. I will also be very interested in Lord's return. He was a little light but has good height, is very good in the lineout and seems to move bodies.
He could be spending his injury enforced break eating pies and working out.

Kind of why I used lock as an example.

                Fabian Holland

Good call. I will also be very interested in Lord's return. He was a little light but has good height, is very good in the lineout and seems to move bodies.
He could be spending his injury enforced break eating pies and working out.

all this chat of depth is so overrated. How many more players do we need?

Right now we have two guys who can play fullback to a decent level.
                3 really good wings.
1 nailed on centre, one guy who has played well there previously
3 guys who would do a good job at 12
                2 guys at 10
                2 guys at 9
8 is skinny, but Sotutu appears to have the tools
                2 guys at 7
2 guys at 6 and a lock who can go there too
                3 locks
Props appear to have the rotation sorted

Not as bad as it seemed.

The Barrett brothers, Beauden, Jordie and Scott – shaping as key figures on the tour – all stayed behind in New Zealand due to the death of their grandmother and will join up with the squad in “mid to late next week”, Foster told Stuff at Auckland airport.

Meanwhile, Halfback Folau Fakatava ruptured his ACL graft in training on Thursday and has been ruled out of the tour with the injury likely a long-term one, while veteran lock Sam Whitelock and outside back Will Jordan both have inner ear infections and are likely to miss the Japan test and expected to meet up with the team in the UK.

Yes. A graft is the surgical replacement ligament.

@Bovidae this test is a potential banana skin the way Japan have pulled out games in recent times and how we are setting all kinds of wrong records...

Sure we will probably win and win well, but we are very ripe playing an understrength team.

Likely to see either DMac or Perofeta starting at 15 with the other on the bench.

RTS on Jordans wing is a guess as well.

@taniwharugby said in All Blacks 2022:

@Bovidae this test is a potential banana skin the way Japan have pulled out games in recent times and how we are setting all kinds of wrong records...

Sure we will probably win and win well, but we are very ripe playing an understrength team.

TBH I don't think those disruptions will make a major difference to who plays, Japan and further games. The full squad will be in for the European part, pretty much, so no excuses imo. There was always going to be a b team look to versus Japan. And they're not a banana skin, Ozzie C sorted them, could even say Ozzie D with their injuries. Ski we could lose, but that because of foster and his records. A handful out is no excuse at all. Eddie one game master plan Jones is not in charge

There is no certainty that Weber is Fakatava's eventual replacement according to this article:
