Japan committing harakiri with that run of penalty “attempts”. Dont think I’ve seen worse at this level.

Wondered what Leicester Fainga'anuku was doing playing for Brazil. Turns out it’s his cousin Éder Gabriel Militão.

For all the talk about soccer being more competitive than rugby, we have 8 winners

    Uruguay
    Italy
    West Germany/Germany
    Brazil
    France
    Spain
    England
    Argentina

Don't see that changing this tournament either. Would be stunned if winner was Morocco, Switzerland, Croatia, Netherlands or Portugal.

Of those, only France and Spain have broken into the club in the last 30 years? IIRC

    @Billy-Tell compared with rugby's four...

Add to that four France, Argies Ireland, Wales, Scotland and you have nine teams have made RWC semis

16 teams have made the FIFA WC semi's but have yet to win it. Six of them (Netherlands, Croatia, Portugal, South Korea, Turkey) in the last 20 years

As you would expect from the global game, football is way more competitive

Would have thought, on paper, Portugal were a fair chance to break in as a new champion.

I haven't watched them (or almost any) beyond the highlights, so not a comment based on form, or eye test.

They have a fair smattering of players playing for European club giants (plus Wolverhampton .... )
Plus have recent pedigree in the Euros (and Nations League), even if they then interpose that with underperforming or averagperfroming in the world cups.

Apart from Ronaldo, they are not a generation on the decline.

    Only missing Jota.

The Dutch have had some good teams through the years that have never kicked on.. likewise I don't expect to this time either, but surprised they never cracked it.

France looking like team to beat for me though

The Dutch are the football equivalents of French rugby.

This Dutch team is noticeably lacking in flair and pretty pragmatic based around a back 5 with van Dijk at the centre of it. Expect them to sit back and let the Argies have the ball and look to hit them on the break down the flanks.

England v France is a fascinating match-up and it's really hard to know how it will go - much depends on whether Southgate goes toe to toe and picks a 4-3-3 or he reverts back to cautious and 5 at the back to try to stifle the threat on the French flanks.

Brazil should cruise past Croatia - should as I would expect Croatia to sit deep, soak up pressure and look to score from a set piece.

For tomorrow's games, Morocco are well fancied to upset Spain and have the game to do it. Portugal always seem to be less than the sum of their parts and the Swiss are pretty canny. It screams extra time.

If Switzerland can win we will have Morocco to make semi finals.

What an amazing display by Morocco.
