Yep, beat the Tahs in Sydney. A 3 h flight across the Ta$man is not the same as flying to SA from NZ or vice versa. There is a reason no team has won after that trip. The Sharks went from Brisbane to Cape Town to Hamilton in 2012 and got blown away in the final.

Wellington shit the bed and actually revealed that they didn't really have a game plan other than "lets do things differently because it is a final", while Cantabs knew exactly what they were doing all match long due to their extensive playoff rugby experience that is part of their very DNA. We lost despite being shit hot favourites going into the match. So yeah I feel your statement but in a semi they should be good to go, where the old ghosts from the past emerge will be the final. Even going back to the days of Bernie Fraser and watching televised games from Athletic park I can't recall Wellington coming through in the big games, although if memory serves they did have the Ranfurly shield in that era at one stage. Sorry if this post is off topic, your post caught my eye and made me nod my head in agreement.

Boy lineouts were a joke before lifting was allowed. My overriding feeling watching the match back in 1985 was that Cantabs simply didn't beleive they could beat Auckland until the very end when they got a roll on. And you get that vibe from the youtube clip. You can actually almost see the Cantabs get their tails up with ten minutes to go.

I treasure the memory of simply watching that fantastic encounter on TV let alone being at the match. It had always been my belief though up until your post that Cantabs were a bit in awe of AKL, perhaps it was quotes in the media or just the way the media built it up. I appreciate you letting me know that the players and general vibe was positive though going into it, that is quite interesting. The sound of the crowd when canterbury scored their final try was tremendous even on the clip.

I used to enjoy the Mooloo parades as a young fella in the early 1980s. Rugby Park was packed in 1980-81 for those RS games. The loss to Wellington mentioned above was played on a Wed afternoon. My mates and I left school early to go to the game. Wellington had a classy backline then.

I was at the game too. Brilliant atmosphere. The embankment was spilling over. I remember confidence from the crowd and the players, but also a real apprehension because everyone knew that Auckland team was fucking good. 
That was one hell of an era. I went to every Saturday defence. I would then rush home to watch the highlights at 4pm (hard to imagine games weren't broadcast live back then). As a young fella it is what got me hooked on rugby.
