We even had our own song on the radio went something like this:<br>"Up and under there she goes,<br>Are you ready yes or no,<br>Up and under there she goes<br>that's the sound of the waikato front row".<br><br>Back in those days the most esteemed position to play I recall was in the front row.<br><br>The Radio was quite good those days, there was also a very good number about yer Cantabs during their magnificent run with shield something about<br>"red and black's got the shield etc"<br><br>Good times

I remember JK deliberately slapping the ball over the dead ball line at the end. Should have been a penalty. The Cantabs were robbed!

Boy lineouts were a joke before lifting was allowed.<br><br>My overriding feeling watching the match back in 1985 was that Cantabs simply didn't beleive they could beat Auckland until the very end when they<br>got a roll on. And you get that vibe from the youtube clip. You can actually almost see the Cantabs get their tails up with ten minutes to go.

It had always<br>been my belief though up until your post that Cantabs were a bit in awe of AKL, perhaps it was quotes in the media or just the way the media built it up.<br>I appreciate you letting me know that the players and general vibe was positive though going into it, that is quite interesting.<br><br>The sound of the crowd when canterbury scored their final try was tremendous even on the clip.

<p>I used to enjoy the Mooloo parades as a young fella in the early 1980s. Rugby Park was packed in 1980-81 for those RS games. The loss to Wellington mentioned above was played on a Wed afternoon. My mates and I left school early to go to the game. Wellington had a classy backline then.</p>

I was at the game too. Brilliant atmosphere. The embankment was spilling over. I remember confidence from the crowd and the players, but also a real apprehension because everyone knew that Auckland team was fucking good. <br><br>
That was one hell of an era. I went to every Saturday defence. I would then rush home to watch the highlights at 4pm (hard to imagine games weren't broadcast live back then). As a young fella it is what got me hooked on rugby. -

<p>Crazy Horse is right though - there was some apprehension because the Orcs had cleaned our clocks in 1984 at EP. But, in '83 they'd come down talking up their new unstoppable superstar, JK, and we'd stuffed them badly.</p>

<p>We were in the pub the night before the Auckland game and a Maori guy was in there - I think he was wearing an Auckland jersey. As we were leaving, he said to us, "You boys think you're going to win tomorrow, don't you. That would be a fucking joke!" We gave him a bit of shit back and left.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Early in the second half most of the Aucklanders were sitting in the northeast corner of LP (No. 3 stand?) and they started celebrating and singing something along the lines of "we've won the shield". And then we scored and they shut up. And then they started and were stopped again. For the last 10 minutes you could have given them megaphones and they wouldn't have been heard.</p>
