Just letting you know I am still alive. Couldn't contribute to match discussions as my computer decided to upload three gig of data into the cloud and as fast broadband does not pass through the street I am staying in meant that it took something like five hours at rather low speed! This result leaves a much better taste in the mouth than I had expected given the lack of expectations going into the game.

The remaining quarter finals in particular the South Africa v France game could change this. Should we get a good win over the Argies, we maybe able to cement that spot a little more. I would imagine that we are now fairly secure in the Top 3, in the worst case scenario.

Will change it, whomever wins, France or SA will be number one. Abs will not be official number one due to it only being published weekly, Monday evening Dublin time I think. We can't be officially number 1 unless we win the final*

              France win
              1 (↑2) France 91.81 (+1.22)
              2 (↑4) New Zealand 90.91 (+3.22)
              3 (↓1) Ireland 90.57 (-3.22)
              4 (↓3) South Africa 88.48 (-1.22)

              SA win
              1 (↑3) South Africa 92.48 (+2.78)
              2 (↑4) New Zealand 90.91 (+3.22)
              3 (↓1) Ireland 90.57 (-3.22)
              4 (↓2) France 87.81 (-2.78)

              • It could be possible with a Fiji semi win I think, it gets complex fast

Interestingly if Fiji win the RWC, there is a good chance they are nowhere near rank 1, as they are so far back, could even be world champs ranked 5th, and them knocking us so out would probably put Ireland bck as world number 1

                  France out, Ireland out.

                  It’s on big time.

Probably mentioned already but they both chose a poor time to drop their first games……one must hand it to the Blacks and Boks for peaking just that little bit better.

That seems an absurd swing for 2 single tight results

oh right, didn't know that. 3.22 points each for a 6.44 point swing seems just nuts for a 4 point win on neutral ground!

Yup RWC double points. And that is stupid. But wr don't want therwc winners not being number 1i guess. I would far prefer if they stayed normal value. Always a zero sum game, winners takes losers points

the ex-player and coach in me really wants to know what "defending the ball" is and how it works. Ball watching is a cardinal sin, so what exactly is the focus?

"We had to develop our ability to defend the ball.

"Wherever the ball is, we had to put people in front of that.

Though we appeared to have sod all people in front of the ball when the Irish spread it to the fringes on the weekend so stuffed if I know what that means as well 🙂

the ex-player and coach in me really wants to know what "defending the ball" is and how it works. Ball watching is a cardinal sin, so what exactly is the focus?

There has been some talk of it for a while but not much with any specificity.

The Crusaders apparently use a version adapted from O'Gara

A bit more here about how it is used at La Rochelle
