I've never seen a player transform like Olivier before.

    He was 145k+

Took a kolpak contract. Returned 2 years later after brexit, having dropped 20k in pace. I believe he had an injury. But still quite remarkable as his jerky action means he looks like he is still looking for maximum pace. Rather than an e.g. Derek Pringle.

Yeah he has had some bad injuries and has remodelled his bowling action he may get a bit quicker when he works into that new action but not 145 again.

    SA's overrate is a disgrace.

It is half an hour before scheduled stumps and they have bowled 72 overs. Even with the additional half hour they will still be 5-6 overs behind. Maybe adding 10 runs for every over behind the rate might make a difference.

Seeing KW at the crease is so comforting and I’m glad he has a pretty handy looking apprentice there with him.

Another one of those ‘next Bothams’…..very handy first class stats, bog standard test player though

    Settle…..

    He’s got this.

KW with test ton number 30. An amazing milestone for anyone, let alone a kiwi test cricketer.

Test batting average sitting at an incredible 55.03 after 97 tests. That’s exceptional. 18th of ALL TIME and you can ( by my less than scientific measure ) discount a few of them due to short lived careers ( Brook, Voges, Pollock, Headley, Paynter ).

…..and while I’m wanking on about our best ever batsman Ravindra gets a cheeky debut ton. Happy days. Well done fellas !

    Century #30 for King Kane
    Century #1 for Ravindra

Great partnership so far, they were under pressure when they came to crease, and it hasn’t been easy out there.

It is now 6pm. Scheduled close of play and SA are 10 overs behind.

The extra half hour is supposed to be extra time in exceptional circumstances, not simply built into the day's play.

Great to see Rachin and Kane getting their centuries.

Nicholls will be gutted. No doubt he would have scored a career saving double century against these guys.

On the over rate, it was a very sedate day in the sun until they brought the spinner on.

Both on 108. I hope there’s a bit of a friendly race going on and Ravindra is enjoying batting with a legend. Can only help his experience in the long term !

Still beggars belief that he was being cockblocked from the test side for so long. He demonstrated his quality as early as that Indian away tour when he saved a test in might what have been his debut

I guess one good thing is that it shows the sponsors can't dictate selection.

I bet ANZ would have been very keen for their poster boy to be selected in the test team as early as possible.

Hmmmmmm, not so sure about that. Nicholls did get 200 not out and you can say all you want about flat tracks, home conditions etc. He had to go out and actually get the runs and he did……

The selectors still had to find a spot for RR, no way they were dropping KW or Mitch. The team needed openers and a keeper….

It is much harder for a batsman to be dropped from this era of the BCs than a bowler

( Wagner probably sitting in the 12th man bunker getting furious )

Beautiful to see two unbeaten tons at the end of a day's play. South Africa bowled nicely especially in the first session. Latham won't get too many plaudits for his innings, but I think it was important in blunting the attack. Not an innings that will stick in the memory, but just an elite opener doing the basics of his role. He's an important part of this team.

Be interesting to see the approach tomorrow. I think we'll see a similar approach to the third session today in session one tomorrow, and then looking to accelerate in sessions two and three with an eye to getting about an hour or so at the South Africans before stumps. With Santner as the 4th bowler we bat ludicrously deep (Phillips at 7, Southee at 11) so if we can resume our dominance tomorrow morning we're very well positioned to be super aggressive.

I am sure we will be pushing the scoring rate tomorrow after the first hour. As has been mentioned we bat really deep and can afford to take some risks. Tomorrow and day 3 will probably be the best days to bat so I reckon we should make the most of it. In an ideal world declaring as Cyclops says about drinks on session 3 on 550-600.

So much batting still to come and I’d love one of these guys to get at least a double ton.

This SA team is as green as the Hulk, we need to be ruthless and make them pay.

Similar weather to yesterday - light-ish breeze and looks like being a hot afternoon. A good time up up the run rate and cook them in the field before bowling.
