I remember watching the original and the PQ wasn't great, probably a reflection of the time it was made, and the budget. This was a big improvement.

Quentin Tarantino says it is easily NZs best ever film ) sure the story is essentially pinched from any number of Westerns but it has a cool kiwi slant to it, some stunning rugged scenery, cool action and Bruno Lawrence is just terrific.

The story is also based on Te Kooti to go with the western theme. Anzac Wallace is also great, especially as someone who didn't really have much of an acting background.
I used to have a collection of DVDs in the 00s when I was doing research/consultancy that I'd give as gifts at conferences/projects etc.
I can remember watching it as a kid in the cinema in Hastings (West End - I think in the 90s Bruno's son owned or managed it), or I have taken the memory on from my parents as they had to shush me all the time because I kept pointing out anytime one of my relatives were on screen (most of it was filmed in the Bay).

TBF, I think lots was filmed in the central plateau area, some might have been filmed in the Naki, but lots in the Bay - the church scene is at Waipatu marae (outskirts of Hastings). Basically everyone in that scene is related to me. Most of the crew were living in Waimarama at the time.
Yeah, Wi Kiki Kaa was great too. Actually for a NZ film the cast were all pretty good.
I think River Queen, Ward's poorer almost similar movie but more based on Titokowaru than Te Kooti might have been filmed in the Naki?

It's on my list to watch again this year.

Nah, he saw Utu as different and refreshing and thought there were too many happy+ending sci-fi films.
Your defence of him makes me believe I got my initial assertion correct (I'm not saying he wasn't a good guy though). I'm not sure why Utu would be associated with sci-fi films. The Quiet Earth I could understand (if you haven't seen it then that's a good 80s NZ film to watch).
Anyway, enjoy your rewatch this year. You can think of baby me being christened in the church when the head gets chopped off.

Anyone watched Maestro? I've watched 45 minutes and it's bollocks, does it get any better?
I can feel all the strings being pulled for the oscar baiting yet all of the performances are over acting (even though we're supposed to pretend Carey Mulligan is brilliant in everything).
As I watch every Oscar best picture nominee I guess I'll keep watching it in parts like it's a Snyder movie

He wasn't really associating them. His point was cinema overall had become a bit too boring, safe and stale and films like Utu (and Reservoir Dogs) were refreshingly different.

I never read the books or watched the original film. Went straight to the new movie and it was outstanding. Will be eager to see part 2

The Baron is WAY better in that one.
This whole scene is so creepy and fucked up. Definitely scarred me at least a bit as a kid.
