Movie review thread...
Ah, i did not know that, it would explain why the 3D side of it wasn't as prominent as in Avatar. Still looked cool though. But yea, probably not much less cool in 2D.

Incidentally, the 3D thing has gone too fucking far. I saw a trailer for a 3D dance movie for christ's sake! The movie looked terrible, and i really fail to see what the 3D aspect is going to add to it. Maybe to cover the horrible premis/writing/acting.
Over the past 16 weeks at the North American box office, the No. 1 movie has been a 3D movie for 12 of those weeks, and not just itsy-bitsy #1's, but record-smashing. For better-or-worse, the trend will continue.

There's also a downside... ya gotta jump on them fast. Most multiplexes are fortunate to have one 3D projector, let alone two. But right now there are probably four big 3D movies in current release, which means "older" 3D films like Avatar are getting bumped to the 2D screens whilst the "Alice in Wonderland," "Titans" and "Train a Dragon" thingie take those valuable 3D projectors.

I recall when "My Bloody Valentine 3D" was released, the studios said there would be a new 3D tentpole released per month, and it looks like they're now producing them faster than that. Can the exhibitors keep up?

Look for sales of 3D televisions to skyrocket the next year-or-so.

ps. Expect Lucas to release Star Wars trilogies in 3D. Will LOTR be far behind? (They're releasing the Blu-Ray boxset right now; The cynic in me suspects in a year-or-so they'll come out with yet another version in 3D (probably theatrical release on DVD and then later the Extended editions...).) -

There aren't enough theatres to keep up with the demand at the moment. Apparently, James Cameron was pissed that Avatar got pulled early from 3D ready theatres so that Clash of the Titans could be shown.

For anyone who prefers a gripping story to flashy gimmicks, I can highly recommend The Ghost Writer. Despite the political overtones - it takes a none too subtle stab at Tony Blair - it's a good thriller. Roman Polanski may be a rapist, but he's a rapist that knows how to make good films. It was made before Polanski got arrested and it's bizarrely ironic how it features a main character who hides out in America to avoid prosecution in Europe. -
Ok, i don't know how to do this but, for your viewing pleasure (provided link works) here is the trailer to Streetdance 3D!!!! (yay)
Jesus M4L! That's cruel and unusual punishment innit?

I see Resident Evil have trotted out another sequel. Hate that shit, Mrs Raz loves it. Difference this time for this one is that they have shot it using James Cameron's 3D cam.

So it might actually be worth a fleeting look. -

Ah, Resident Evil....great video game. That could have been a great movie franchise if it had decent writers. -

If so, then all of the others before it looked cool as shit, Iron Man 2, Robin hood, and Prince of Persia all look like goes to me. -

Kismet, a friend forwarded me a recent interview with Richard Taylor (WETA) where he says he hopes the LOTR trilogy will be released in 3D. One presumes with a post-production 3D technique that "Titans" employed.

There is also a delay in shooting "The Hobbit." One suspects it could be rumoured negotiations about MGM selling the rights to Warner Bros., and one imagines both studios would be seriously reconsidering the original plan to shoot the films in 2D. -
I went and saw Boy during Easter weekend. What a fantastic film. Taika did a very good job. It's quite funny, yet also covers the serious issues in the story very well too. It's a shame in some of the smaller places like Palmerston North, the Cinema Gold type cinemas are the only ones showing it (I saw it in The Hutt)
(click through for a whole lot of other clips)
not sure, but I understand The Hobbit has been pushed back a few months so they can film it in 3D. That IMO will be worth it. Weta don't do things half assed, so I am keen to see them pull off Bilbo fighting the Dragon in 3D <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> -
Went to see Date Night with Mrs Jack . Got some free tickets off the radio . Damn glad i didn't pay any actual money to see it . A few amusing scenes in it but on the whole not flash . 4/10.

Saw Kick-Ass yesterday and while I accept that I m target marrket and primed to like this sort of movie I thought it was awesome.

Good story, well acted and top action scenes. Good riffs on other superhero movies.

Hard to give a full review without giving too much away but suffice to say that anyone who likes superhero flicks with some something different will enjoy Kick-Ass. -
I watched the Baader-Meinhof Complex last night. It's about the Red Army Faction (a leftist group that committed a bunch of bombings and murders in the name of their idea of social justice) in Germany in the late 60s and 70s. It's quite a good movie but glorifies the group a little bit too much for me. But it has encouraged me to do more reading and hunt out a few of the documentaries about them.

I look forward to seeing Kick Ass.

Toddy: The concept of the Invention of Lying is bloody good and the first half trucks along nicely, but then it went to shit - it really could have been so much more. -
yeah I agree about Invention of lying, started off well, but got lost and unfunny about half way through.
-
I just watched Brothers. Toby Maguire is a marine who goes missing in Afghanistan, Jake Gellynhal (how do you spell his name???) is his deadbeat brother just out of prison who helps look after Maguire's kids when he is reported as dead. Natalie Portman is Maguire's wife. A little bit predictable but watch-able non the less. 6.5/10.

Natalie Portman is flippin hot in this movie! -
Not sure where this stands as far as the thread goes. Just watched the trailer for The Human Centipede. All I can say is yuck!

Im not going to link to it as I don't want to be seen as a sicko. But if you have the stomach for that type of horrible shit its on apple trailers... -
Watched HD version of To Live and Die in L.A. I love that movie, especially the counterfeiting montage. Robbie Muller was such a good cinematographer.

I laughed my ass off during that Human Centipede Trailer. Pure camp.
Yip that's a great movie. Peterson really hasn't done enough in his career. I miss movies like this, just not made anymore.

I wish I'd found that trailer camp. The Dr was hamming it up a bit but the whole premise is just yuck mate. -
Yeah, really well made genre films that extend beyond the normal boundaries but aren't too self consciously "arty" (even if they looking very flashy). I love those 80's thrillers like that.

If you want an excellent crime themed, genre film check out The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Between Red Terror and myself, I think it's got about 10 mentions on this thread already!
