I went and saw Boy during Easter weekend. What a fantastic film. Taika did a very good job. It's quite funny, yet also covers the serious issues in the story very well too. It's a shame in some of the smaller places like Palmerston North, the Cinema Gold type cinemas are the only ones showing it (I saw it in The Hutt)<br />

Check out these trailers -

(click through for a whole lot of other clips)<br />
ps. Expect Lucas to release Star Wars trilogies in 3D. Will LOTR be far behind? (They're releasing the Blu-Ray boxset right now; The cynic in me suspects in a year-or-so they'll come out with yet another version in 3D (probably theatrical release on DVD and then later the Extended editions...).)
<br />
<br />
not sure, but I understand The Hobbit has been pushed back a few months so they can film it in 3D. That IMO will be worth it. Weta don't do things half assed, so I am keen to see them pull off Bilbo fighting the Dragon in 3D <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Went to see Date Night with Mrs Jack . Got some free tickets off the radio . Damn glad i didn't pay any actual money to see it . A few amusing scenes in it but on the whole not flash . 4/10.

I got told The Invention of Lying was really good. It wasn't. It'd be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Ricky Gervais was great in The Office but he sucks at directing and acting in movies.

Saw Kick-Ass yesterday and while I accept that I m target marrket and primed to like this sort of movie I thought it was awesome.<br />
<br />
Good story, well acted and top action scenes. Good riffs on other superhero movies.<br />
<br />
Hard to give a full review without giving too much away but suffice to say that anyone who likes superhero flicks with some something different will enjoy Kick-Ass.

I watched the Baader-Meinhof Complex last night. It's about the Red Army Faction (a leftist group that committed a bunch of bombings and murders in the name of their idea of social justice) in Germany in the late 60s and 70s. It's quite a good movie but glorifies the group a little bit too much for me. But it has encouraged me to do more reading and hunt out a few of the documentaries about them.<br />
<br />
I look forward to seeing Kick Ass.<br />
<br />
Toddy: The concept of the Invention of Lying is bloody good and the first half trucks along nicely, but then it went to shit - it really could have been so much more.

I just watched Brothers. Toby Maguire is a marine who goes missing in Afghanistan, Jake Gellynhal (how do you spell his name???) is his deadbeat brother just out of prison who helps look after Maguire's kids when he is reported as dead. Natalie Portman is Maguire's wife. A little bit predictable but watch-able non the less. 6.5/10.<br />
<br />
Natalie Portman is flippin hot in this movie!

<br />
Im not going to link to it as I don't want to be seen as a sicko. But if you have the stomach for that type of horrible shit its on apple trailers...

Watched HD version of To Live and Die in L.A. I love that movie, especially the counterfeiting montage. Robbie Muller was such a good cinematographer. <br />
<br />
I laughed my ass off during that Human Centipede Trailer. Pure camp.

Yip that's a great movie. Peterson really hasn't done enough in his career. I miss movies like this, just not made anymore.<br />
<br />
I wish I'd found that trailer camp. The Dr was hamming it up a bit but the whole premise is just yuck mate.

Yeah, really well made genre films that extend beyond the normal boundaries but aren't too self consciously "arty" (even if they looking very flashy). I love those 80's thrillers like that.<br />
<br />
If you want an excellent crime themed, genre film check out The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Between Red Terror and myself, I think it's got about 10 mentions on this thread already!

BTW, on human centipede - between knowing a bit of anatomy, having had a few colonoscopies, and performed animal experiments, I find stuff like that very difficult to take seriously. Cracked up at his anatomical diagram. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The guy behind the whole thing is the most egotistical loser I've seen in a while. Troy Duffy is his name. Fucking knob that guy. Had the script that everyone wanted, a fucking bona fide money tree or so he claims. But he wouldn't let the studios "water" down his vision. Which seemed to change on a daily basis. He had no experience as a director and had fluked his way to writing a bloody good screenplay. The end result was a poor movie with cult status for no apparent reason other than the director/writer is a c*nt.

I've been having a bit of a movie blitz lately. These are the ones I can remember.<br />
<br />
Push: a Heroes type movie with Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, and Uncle Bully himself Chris Curtis. Not a great movie but enjoyable switch off your brain for a few hours - 6.5/10.<br />
Battle of Algiers: definitely lives up to the hype. 8.5/10 (losses half a mark for being French.)<br />
Boy: again, definitely lives up to the hype. Saw my rellies in the characters. 8.5/10.<br />
Glenngarry Glen Ross: Disappointing, too much like a play (which it was based on) - but Alec Baldwin was classic in his 2nd billing role which is basically a cameo - the 30 Rock producers definitely saw this movie. The rain was way overdone too. 5.5/10.<br />
Zombieland: (I think I may have already mentioned it) was bloody good. Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone and the goofy guy from Adventureland fighting Zombies in the US. 8/10.

Didja see the documentary ("Overnight") about Duffy and the making of that movie? Friggin' hilarious. Everything from his massively inflated narcissism, his metal band "The Brood," and the way he treats his friends as slaves and then condemns them for not being sufficiently grovelling & grateful enough, is sociopathic gold.
