Oh that's really sad, bad news. Amazing player and arguably the best running halfback I've ever seen- lethal 10m from the tryline. Hard as nails too.

      Oh no.

My first rugby hero. Which was probably because he was my brother's... and that was probably because he was from Northland.

My memory of him playing is very restricted to kicking a huge penalty v the Boks in 76 and scoring in the first test Lions 77. Just a but too young to remember much else.

Halfback for the Team of the Century IIRC.

Maybe his pass wasn't exactly Laidlawesque but gee he could sniff a gap.

He was an awesome player who was seriously fast - check out from 7:30 below. Watch the whole 20+ minutes and you'll see him taking Gareth Edwards to the cleaners around the scrum and ruck.

Actually, I now recall watching him live. Northland v Romania 1975.

Sid kicked the only penalty in a 3-nil win.

Like others on here Sid was also my first rugby hero. Unsure why. (My other sporting hero was smokin Joe Frazier). I supported North Auckland (as a child) because of Sid but also his brothers too.

          RIP Sid

You can always rely on Phil Gifford for a completely over the top article about any All Black from that era ( a physique envied by Arnold Schwarzenegger ? Good god, who approves this rubbish ? ) but it does sound like Going was quite the player.

Talking to older family members at a function today they mentioned him and Laidlaw would have been a brilliant one/two punch in today’s game.

I think he was one of those players, like Bruce Robertson, who would excel in any era. Tough little bastard too.

Can vaguely remember watching a couple of games at Athletic Park. Was in awe of Sid. Super tricky and hard to tackle. Went home to the Hutt Valley and practiced the back handed reverse pass ala Sid for the next couple of years.

Can remember him, Brian and Ken in 70s executing triple scissors for North Auckland at Garden of Eden. Try scored, natch.

Hmmm. I saw lot of Edwards and Going back in the olden times, I just say this - thru out the early-mid 70's every team the ABs played had a "stop Going" plan - but the ABs never felt the need for a "stop edwards" plan

I had a chuckle at that "and for a time was a serious rival to the global scrum-half supremacy of Gareth Edwards." line too. The only time I saw Edwards outplay Going was the 3rd Test in '71. Most other times it was the other way round.
