Lineout was a worry but we have had two of the worlds best leave/retire.
Barrett has always been good (not quite at Whitelock or BBBR level but capable for a shorter lock) but Ive never thought of Patty as a really good lineout guy. We,ve basically got two short locks and a reasonably tall six.

However our shortage of locks means we cant play a lock at 6 and our issues at 6 means lineout is not the primary skillset we need from a 6. (especially with a short-ish 8).

Do we sacrifice a power defence six for a better lineout six? Swap Finau for say Grace who is a good lineout operator?

@Lancaster-Park Finau's not bad in the lineout, we just chose to throw it to... Savea...?
Hoskins is a good lineout forward, though mentioning him is likely to get the Blues guys all frothy again.

@Bones yep I agree - coaches need to work on him, not replace him. He is a natural runner so his first instinct is to get up to speed and then look. Better to know the space is there and pass on instinct. Good thing was they created more room in the 2nd test.

The lineout was a mess but confident they will sort it - everything including once they had the ball.

How much longer does Reiko need. Before the coaches accept the obvious. Hes not a center.

i dont think that fair, he has been arguably one of the best centres in the world in the past...hes just a particular type of centre and the coaches either need to

        1. drop him if how he plays doesnt fit with their game plan
        2. coach him to do what they need
        3. come up with a gameplan that lets him shine

just trying to play a certain way and then saying its not working....over and over...is not an option

I'm no Rieko fluffer, but Beauden is getting sucked off by all and sundry and he blew 2 far more obvious overlaps than Rieko on the weekend.
When we have a night like that in the lineout and people are talking about our centre, that's just fucken weird.

Our best lineout of the night was Finau over the back.

The AB lineout for years was helped by A Smith's pass. We could win it anywhere and still have good wide attacking ball. So lots of 2 and 4.

Finau was a strong lineout option in SR. It makes literally no sense replacing him in the hope our lineout isn't the shambles it was against England.

The first thing to fix is having faster distribution from the base i.e, Ratima starts and Christie goes back to passing school.
It essential we speed up our game because that is our natural advantage. We have the most instinctively attacking players in the world.

Agree. And the HB change is the key starting point. But having 2 limited passers in midfield is also an issue.

There were a few things happening with the lineout (other than the couple of complete shockers by Taylor where the throw barely went past head height or past 2) that I’d normally look past because with Whitelock and Retallick we had bail out options even against teams that like to attack opposition ball (like England). But we don’t have those now so we need to get it pinpoint and not muck around with the shuffling, calls and lifting.

@ACT-Crusader I fucking despiiiiise that two formation lineout where they go to a usual formation, compress, and then expand again. I firmly believe your put yourselves under unnecessary pressure.
Identify the mismatch, call, quick feet and lift. Lineouts are basic.

On the bright side a lineout is easier to fix than a scrum. We have a scrum

I would rather both were functioning competently.

The lineout completely killed any momentum we had in the 1st half and were the main reason for us going in behind at halftime.

Lineouts are best when simple, quick and varied.

It’s not as if the English lineout is incredibly tall.

Most games now have more lineouts than scrums.

And you can often get away with having a lesser scrum and still get FK / penalties as shown by the refs guessing after a few collapses.
