Simbane ran 9.82, but didn't win a medal. A ridiculously fast race. Noah Lyles had to run a PB to win it.

Fastest 100m of all time (combined times)

Seven runners under 9.90 and one other at 9.91.

A really great standard, although still behind what Usain Bolt achieved.

Reluctant to share this on account of James Corden being in it……he’s actually a better sprinter than comedian

But good for perspective……Boult definitely cruising and having fun.

They have been in a 12-16 year purple patch with their female swimmers. I’m not a huge watcher of the swimming but they just keep unearthing new talent year after year.

@ACT-Crusader it’s not just the swimming tho.

Two out of 3 medals in woman’s high jump.

Whatever they do at their training camps, it’s clearly world class, if not world leading.

Is there any evidence against the Chinese swimmer…or is just that he’s Chinese?

              Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

But if you google him now it’s all about the speculation of being a drugs cheat.

              Absolutely shameful.

I mean if his name was Marchand no one would bat an eyelid.

The Chinese do have history so im not saying he’s definitely clean but it strikes me as a bit of racism for the moment.

Yes they most definitely would. Anybody who knows anything about swimming knows this doesn't pass the smell test. Him being Chinese doesn't exactly help given their history. Christ, accusations were levelled at Ian Thorpe back in the day. More racism?

              If he was Russian?

              ?

Would it be "racist" to question a freak performance from a competitor from a country with form in doping if he was Russian?

I’d be suspicious if the Russians didn’t cheat. That’s my default setting.

I seem to have stirred a hornets nest here somewhat.

Both the Chinese and the Russians have been caught cheating at one time or another. And such an exceptional performance out of the blue will raise eyebrows. Regardless of the ethnicity of the athlete

Michelle Smith the Republic of Ireland swimmer a prime example. They must have been Irish level stupidity to think they could get away with it! The fact that she effectively has is even more staggering.

Not sure if this is real, but it gives some perspective on an Olympic swimmer vs reasonable "average Joe" swimmers. These athletes are out of this world.

I'm not surprised. Pro/elite athletes are like a different sub species. Just that much faster and stronger in every way relating to their sport

Funding is a part of it. Our richest woman, Gina Reinhardt (mining billionaire) has put millions into select Olympic sports purely out of philanthropy - swimming, rowing, beach volleyball being three.

But also the Government invest pretty well, and are quite targeted in where they invest. If you're not a sport that consistently delivers medals then you have to sing for your supper.

It's one of the reasons why our Women's 7s has success where our 15s are poor - they tap into Olympic funding through the Federal Government. Thus our 7s women are full time, where the others are working 9 to 5 and training outside of that.

And while our women are incredibly talented, I think it's probably fair to say there is a shallower pool of competition across the board given the attitudes towards females in certain parts of the world.

And perfection of technique. My wife takes a third of my strokes to swim faster, for longer.

As much as I don't think butterfly should be a thing, one has to marvel that there are people who can not only do it without drowning, but do it so well they could beat joe average doing any other stroke over 100m.

I tried running at the pace the marathon medal contenders will be, I managed to last about 100m before I was gassed. Its just incredible that humans can sustain that for 2 hours.

@Cyclops yeah I saw something the other day showing the 1km times for the 10,000m record, ave 2.37 per km...they'd be lapping me just after I complete my 1st km!

I tried running at the pace the marathon medal contenders will be, I managed to last about 100m before I was gassed. Its just incredible that humans can sustain that for 2 hours.

Years ago I ran the Auckland half marathon. Not long after I'd finished my race the top runners were finishing. Crazy

Triathlon relay about to start. Swimming in the Seine looks and sounds about as appealing as diving into a sewer...

i get the want to have those visuals around the city for the two last legs, but swimming has been banned in that river for a really long time for a reason.

Couple of athletes have infections and are missing this relay

On look and outcomes, it reminds me of the 1990's era report on Lake Rotorua referring to it then as an "unflushed toilet".

I'm not surprised. Pro/elite athletes are like a different sub species. Just that much faster and stronger in every way relating to their sport

And perfection of technique. My wife takes a third of my strokes to swim faster, for longer.

As much as I don't think butterfly should be a thing, one has to marvel that there are people who can not only do it without drowning, but do it so well they could beat joe average doing any other stroke over 100m.

My parents made me join a swimming club in standard 4 through to form 2 and during that time I pretty much won every race I entered at my school swimming sports. But I gave it up by 3rd form and made the finals but was well back in the pack. By 4th form I wasn't even making finals.

Just a little bit of technique and training helps.

I can barely dog paddle now.
