    Three main events in 70 - 75.

First, at 73 Boks maul stopped and Finau come up side. Pretty sure he heard Brace say 'don't change your bind' but not 'out, out'.

Completely unnecessary, as Boks going backwards and RD effected turnover at 73.17. The following 5m lineout leads to try.

Darry make run and tackled at 76:14. Knee on ground but Etzebeth doesn't release. Pen ought to have gone our way.

Last two minutes BB and I think DMac both try kick passes when possession absolutely key. FFS.

That said, reffing from 65 - 68 cut our legs from under us.

This situation just shows the stupidity of the knee on the ground = tackle interpretation.

Does no such thing. A tackle requires a definition and Barry met that definition. The ref was incompetent.

That was a maul if a player from either side was bound to Darry and on their feet.

But there weren't, so why bring that up?

@reprobate Agree with you about the yapping - but, I wonder how many times Brace sent Jonny Sexton off. A weekly occurrence? 🙂

The somewhat annoying thing about that incident is that while play continued, PSdT hit Blackadder high in what would have been a very kickable position.

Overall, that was a really good test - very physical.

@pakman - have you done your scrum analysis? There were a couple around 55-60 mins where the Bok loosehead didn't look to be binding legally to me.

@Chris-B blight on the game like I said. I don't care who it is getting fucked off for yapping, it's a good thing. If it were Sexton then clearly 'good' wouldn't do it justice.
The more it happens, the less it will happen.

I agree with you - but tell people you're changing the rules and back up the refs. Don't call it once, rub out a try, and then don't call it the rest of the game. It's just random, and that's the issue

@antipodean play it forward two frames after Darry tries to fight forward

Edit: or rather don’t - this picture illustrates my point just as well. Eben can’t know whether Darry’s got a knee down.

So he isn’t going to release him unless he gets a call from the ref.

Darry knows his knees hit the deck so he knows he’s been tackled.

He needs to release. But he doesn’t.

              Penalty Green.

You could entertain the possibility that I don’t care to trade points on whether the ref got this particular call right and have a reasonable argument that the rule is stupid

Beauden Barrett was dogshit. Why a player with his experience gets a pass for brain dead kicks, not knowing whether its half time, kicks out on the full, kicking the ball away multiple times when chasing the game is beyond me. The saffa wasn't great, but he hardly needed to be to make team of the week.

The bench got criticised but when you look back at the poor exits, BB chip kicks, and the sin bin being cumulative, then it was the players that started who didn’t perform. The exception being Finau who just didn’t listen to ref.

The biggest work on is exits.

Beaudy's two chip kicks in the last two or three minutes were complete madness. You've just got to keep the ball in hand when time is pretty much up and you're chasing the game.

You regularly see teams able to snatch a win by keeping the ball in hand at the death. Speculative chip kicks are just such a low percentage option.

You could entertain the possibility that I don’t care to trade points on whether the ref got this particular call right and have a reasonable argument that the rule is stupid

We all know he got it hopelessly wrong. It was in front of him, blatantly obvious and not this refereeing teams only howler. They simply weren't good enough to be in charge of a fixture between these two teams.

And the rule is reasonably clear and easy to adjudicate - the worst outcome I've seen lately is being forced to release a tackled player who then gets to flop unhindered across the try line.

@antipodean there you go again about the officiating.

It’s a shit rule for players (and spectators.)

But it’s a worse rule the way it is officiated

BB also kicked into touch on the full after taking the ball back, and on the stroke of half time didn't wait for the hooter before kicking into touch. He could have easily cost us more points. We nag him and then he goes and has a great game, like his salvation act vs England

Look here’s two immutable facts that will hopefully move us all to next week’s second match thread

                                          1. Brace joins a long list of ‘blind, Irish referees’

                                          2. NZ, biggest choke since Michael Hutchence
