I'm a fan of giving him the series. He's young, if you look at his last 3 test series SA in SA, India in India - thats 2 of the toughest intros going, even Pakistan in NZ isn't great for a batsman as their bowling unit is OK, its their batting overseas thats awful.

So to drop him right before a terrible test team with no bowling unit finally tours would tell us nothing. Especially if they gave his spot to an old guy. What would we learn then? That anyone can score off the Bangles? Its like when Sinclair would get dropped for a home visit by Zimbanwe & then selected to tour Australia & fail

If Nichols can't score off the Bangles in NZ then, yes, test cricket is maybe not for him. But he should get the chance, its not like we have a lot of 25 year old batsmen kicking the door down.
