The waterfront stadium spokesman has explained their updated thinking.
Summary:
- Context: new mayor in town who wants to move the port off the waterfront within a decade
- Basically same idea as before but with Eden Park Trust Board moving to the waterfront & essentially owning the waterfront stadium
- $9 billion cost all up (including selling off Eden Park land for housing) to be raised privately
- International developer likely to win tender as nobody in NZ has this kind of money
- Enough money left over ($120 million) to build a purpose-built cricket stadium somewhere in Auckland. No room for cricket at the waterfront.

I do like the idea of a slightly more central stadium, but at the same time, Eden Park is a fantastic facility, so it feels like they're trying to solve a problem that doesn't really exist.
The problem is Eden Park has terrible crowds and is difficult to get to (although the CRL and any future light rail down Sandringham Rd will improve that situation). I argue the crowds would vastly improve if the stadium is centrally located at a site with probably the best location transport-wise in the entire country (Quay Park) and literally a stone's throw from the CBD with all the restaurants and bars imaginable - Parnell as well. Improved crowds make more money for the tenants at the stadium, including the rugby unions. It doesn't even have to be paid for by public money. The waterfront proposals can be fully or mostly privately funded with a little bit of brain-power and a little less sectarian interests.
The problem is Mike Lee and his Eden Park fanatics remain on Council.

I’ve been to countless sell outs and either drive and walk for 20 minutes or go to a local (to me) bar grab a feed and a few drinks and jump on one of an endless stream of free buses that take me stray to the ground
There’s plenty wrong with EP but imo the access issues are massively over stated
Twickenham. There’s an asshole of a place to get to. Or Wembley for that matter

@No-Quarter Eden Park is not a fantastic facility at all, it is a jumbled mess. It's our biggest, sure, but it is a hodge podge of bits. Not that I don't enjoy it there but there is work to be done in making it navigatable and user friendly

Fulhams Craven Cottage is a ‘jumbled mess’ but is still consistently* voted one of the best football grounds in Europe.
Despite some rank poor facilities
- by consistently I mean I’ve seen at least three polls that have it in top half dozen

If a new stadium is used for concerts and rugby/league/football IMHO it makes more sense than EP which will never be allowed to have lots of concerts, and Mt Smart which is a nice shaped ground with no limit on concerts, but in a bad location

Part of the reason they've been allowed concerts recently was the changes to the eastern stand. The larger screen also added a structure decrease the noise leakage
Stage one of the new four stage plan is to build larger eastern and western stands. This will significantly change the amount of sound leaking out

One thing I’ll say about that waterfront “sunken” stadium proposal is that these steps leading into the harbour are gold. It would be a great lunch spot. CBD workers would be swarming all over this public space every day. Also, a great place to host waka ama/sailing regattas and triathlons. The crowds would be great.

Have you ever been to a match there?? Never had a problem parking near Eden Park when driving from Tauranga. Had plenty of problems when going to Vector Arena or Stanley St though.
Amazing to see below sea level plans with our supposed tsunami and sea rise issues....

Have you ever been to a match there?? Never had a problem parking near Eden Park when driving from Tauranga. Had plenty of problems when going to Vector Arena or Stanley St though.

@ARHS - Plenty in the past 20 years. Always a big walk from some side street at least 2km from the ground unless you get there hours early in one of those school parking lots. The longest walk was 5km away to St Lukes where the charter buses were parked. Hence why I switched to taking the train but it was easier as I was near a rail station at those times.
Not sure if you realise this but most of downtown Auckland is reclaimed from the sea. They’ve been doing it since the 19th century. Reclaiming more land for a stadium isn’t a big deal in my humble opinion.

Try Morningside or the Kingsland Avenues or top of Dominion Rd depending on which gate your entry is.
Open question from a longtime greenie: Is the planned sunken stadium fully enclosed? If so how will the turf be managed? If not then how do you deal with flooding from torrential rainfall?
I am against the idea in principle because I think Auckland and Tauranga need to be cleaned up water-wise and less built near the shoreline. I can only assume that by being at street level there will be huge amounts of rubbish and runoff going into the harbour. Eden Park conversely has great drainage which serves the nearby area well.

The one thing we do not need on Auckland's waterfront is a stadium. They are effectively a 13 story blank wall. There's a reason they are always pictured lit up at night. It's because during the day even the best of them look industrial and uninspiring. I'd rather have the container terminal - at least there's something to watch

The promoted one is sunk into the harbour, but with a floating roof - to improve the aesthetics. Quite an engineering feat really, to allow for good drainage of the turf without seawater blow-back. Big helicopter needed to drop it into place too I imagine.

I'd like a stadium at the port, and a port at Eden Park - with a canal dug to it.
And I want no pumps at the new sunken stadium, and no dredging of my new canal, because I wish it therefore it is so. (I intend contracting my team of unicorns for these 2 pieces of never-ending extra work, at a lucrative rate).

No way. Eden Park is a piece of piss to get to from the shore. Plenty of free buses or via the trains in town.
We occasionally drive too but mainly for blues games when the crowd is smaller. No problems parking within a 10min walk.

You just need to know where to park with all the closed roads for any event at Eden Park. Usually it is a 10 min walk from where I park. Mt Smart is worse for parking despite being in an industrial area.

Same, I get the same park for AB or Super games and it's an easy walk, did it when my kids were little and they either walked or were on my shoulders. Didn't kill me, so must have been easy enough.
