I thought LBJ should be MVP over Harden.

Also I hate that they announce them after the finals, rather than in the first week of the playoffs. Massively decreases the care factor.

A classic case of trying to stretch it out and maximise publicity.

Plus they have made it more of an ‘occasion’ that is televised, fashion, fanfare, media etc.

The MVP used to be awarded during the playoffs before a game that the MVP would play.

@magpie_in_aus The problem with these types of comparisons is that the numbers only tell part of the story.

Harden's team won 15 more games in the regular season and in the much tougher Western division. He had to share point scoring with Chris Paul, Clint Capella, Gerald Green and Eric Gordon.

Lebron only has one consistent scorer to contend with, Kevin Love, and he was only available for 45 games. So he was doing it all for his team but won only 50 games in the regular season.

If it was all about stats and nothing else then Westbrook was the MVP, he got more rebounds, more assists and scored 2000+ points in 80 games with another bona fide scorer on his team in Paul George.

But it's not just about stats. Harden's team were the front runners almost all season and he is the main reason why.

What skews everyone's view is the time frame of this award. Its been fucking ages since the last game of the finals. If they'd awarded this at the conclusion of the regular season, silly stat graphics like this wouldn't be a thing.

So Paul George has opted out of his final season with the OKC under his current contract in favour of unrestricted free agency. He can still end up playing for the Thunder but it will be on a max contract. Somewhere in the area of $45m per season. The last year of this contract was $21m.

If the Lakers want him they will have to pay through the nose which would mean Kawhi Leonard is their only other real target. Based on the fact they have today made public an offer to trade Ingram, Kuzma and couple draft picks tot he Spurs to get Leonard to the Lakers. So if they take George absolutely no way is Lebron going to the Lakers. Not on a max contract anyway.

@raznomore i don’t think LBJ is necessarily thinking about a max contract given everything else that is generating cash for him. What he will be mindful of though is what a potential team is doing to draw other players.

You may recall that when the big 3 got together at the Heat, that Bosh, Wade and LBJ were all on similar money but it was Bosh that had the highest contract.

That allowed them to get/keep some other good pieces.

If Lakers are breaking the bank for PG then Lebron will want to know that there is enough cap to get other pieces plus his $30m odd

@act-crusader you're dead right actually. Lebron is fuelled by legacy, championships and, one would hope, a hate of GSW. I didn't really think about what he did at the heat.

Was just reading that it all hinges on George going to the Lakers. Plus Dwyane(the stupidest spelling ever, always wanted to vent about that)Wade. But if they get PG and Kawhi its basically a done deal.

A story did the rounds on ESPN that LBJ texted Durant about joining him in LA. A bit embarrassing, you can't deny something if you put it in writing

One could say that the cap changes ruined the NBA....

It opened the door to allow the Warriors to make a bid for KD and also more broadly to allow some ridiculous contracts to players not worth anything near what they are paid.

KD made a bitch move but ultimately the type of money that in under the cap is so emmense now all we are going to see if super teams.

                                  4 yrs for $154 million.

Where does this leave PG and/or Leonard? Do the Lakers still have cap room?

                                        Lebron confirmed to the Lakers.

Western Conference is going to be ridiculous next season.

Jesus H. What is the point of the Eastern Conference now?

                                          4 yrs for $154 million.

Where does this leave PG and/or Leonard? Do the Lakers still have cap room?

@bovidae PG is committed to the Thunder for the next two years at least.

As canefan pointed out, the two biggest free agents left are Leonard and Boogie.

Kawhi seems intent on going to LA, but the Spurs have them over a barrel if they want to trade now. Ingram, Kuzma AND Ball could all go as a part of that trade.

It's actually hard to think of a team in the West who won't be half decent next season. The Kings will always be the Kings, but the Mavs are building nicely, the Grizzlies will be much better, the Nuggets have locked in Jokic.

They could have 10 of the top 12/13 teams in the league.
