@pot-hale something would have to forthcoming from the host unions, as i doubt we can afford to send 70-odd players north for a month. (wouldn't that constitute about 40% of our fully-pro player base?).

Agreed. But the NZ Maori have travelled previously so it’s possible. Hell, NZ could select players based in Europe if they wanted.

That is the exact opposite of our policy.

And? Your policy relates to the senior team, not the junior team. If you want to capture more young Kiwi players and mix them with a couple of old heads, what’s the problem?

because our official line is "leave, and you are dead to us"

    and I'm happy with that

Hmmm. I hear what you’re saying but something needs to change.

No it doesn't. We lose players overseas all the time. There is only so many high paying spots in NZ.

Yeah but lose how many and how often? There’s 18 Kiwi-born players in Ireland currently - about 6-7 with parents/GP. 36 SH players.
98 SH born in total across the Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Italian teams out of 671 players.

We've lost the most numbers of players in the last 10 years, we've also been the best team in the world for those 10 years. We're not really losing the top echelon of players. Our depth is being eroded, and of course that's a concern, but the JAB aren't going to solve that.

So who are the good (head) coaches active in NZ at the moment?

The list is pretty thin - Robertson and Plumtree.

Umaga, Mauger, and Cooper are all rather mediocre.

How the hell did Mauger get a Super Rugby appointment?

Leon MacDonald doesn't seem interested in higher ambitions, but Tom Coventry looks like a good option.

Cooper is decidedly uninspiring. The Maori were awful under him.

My understanding: players who also qualified for the Islands were reluctant to play for the JABs, in case a solitary cap ruled them out of all future international rugby.

Junior is a stupid name for the B side anyways.

@stargazer the Nz 7’s are the 2nd team now that can mean players can’t play for another country except that loophole for 7’s during Olympics

No. The JABs are still the official 2nd team listed with World Rugby. The 7s have always been a team considered under WR eligibility rules.

It is a deliberate loophole use by some countries that they name a
Team they never select for the reasons stated by others.
Playing for a DevXV is attractive to players as it doesn’t lock them in and attractive to selectors as they get to see how well players do before making decisions

@crucial I understand the point you make but as there is no junior all blacks team and has not been for a few years now(in that respect) the Nz 7’s are in Nz terms the 2nd team until therjunior all blacks start up again

You are talking about 2 entirely different things though.

We have never used the 7s to lock in players for XVs but players do know that under WR rules they are committed once they play (Olympic thing aside)

I get what you are saying as well but the 7s are not (and never have been) our 2nd team. They are a different method of eligibility setting.

We simply do not play a '2nd team' (except when selecting the first team against a minnow nation)

Ok. I get your point. You're right in the first part of this statement but wrong in semantics. 7s are not the 2nd team by definition but they are because there NZR don't run an A team. They are not the Second Team, they are the second team.

@jauzy019 There isn't too many good halfbacks without a super contract at present. Am thinking of Billy Guyton, kylem O'Donnell, Té Aihe Toma, jono hickey and Chris smiley (whose getting on a bit in age now). O'Donnell looked pretty good at times for taranaki last season though

Thought this was interesting development in light of recent discussions on here. I’ve thought for a while that there needs to collaboration between NZRU and like minded unions on development and keeping of talent.

Tell them to go fuck themselves, Jordan!

Nelson is great in August - Wales is wet, miserable, and full of fuckers who don't speak English you can understand. 🙂

@bones I was more a Marshall type 9, my pass was shite, and the rest of my game was suited to the side of the scrum, so I moved there when our team had a real 9.
