Hurricanes announce Fehi Fineanganofo signs with Newcastle Red Bulls after the 2026 Super & NPC seasons.

And that right there folks is the biggest issue NZ Rugby faces right now. An up and coming player leaves at just 23, I've got a feeling this trend will only get worse. Money talks and unfortunately both NPC and Super just don't compete.

I think things have actually largely improved since the Silverlake Deal.

There will always be players like Fineanganofo who take the security, but in general it feels like it is better than it was pre Silverlake.

Could be a strategic decision by Fehi to leave early and then come back after the WC (if he so chooses). With Naholo and Moorby signed for the next two years he's not necessarily guaranteed a start, and he will only be 25/26 if he chooses to come back and will have more $$ in the bank.

Thats a massive shame. Have a feeling he will be a starter by the end of the year. Looks promising in the midfield too. He'll only be 25/26 by then so could look to return

Are there any examples of players coming back in their prime after leaving early in their careers? I can't think of any.

Faaingaanuku has come back looking pretty decent. Has set somewhat of a blueprint for young players to go somewhere new, earn some coin and come back for another crack.

Brett Cameron returned and has been a solid contributer to the canes too, and Moorby just returned (tbc if hes still got it).

Good examples. I had forgotten about them.

Left at 26 as a fringe SR player. Came back at 32 a much better player. I would say he was in his prime as midfielder

The unusual thing about his situation though was that he came home for covid/family reasons and was expecting to retire

    Wikipedia:
In 2012 it was announced that Kaino would be leaving the Blues for Japanese club Toyota Verblitz on a two-year deal, following the conclusion of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.[5]

On 4 October 2013, Kaino announced he had re-signed with New Zealand Rugby Union, North Harbour and Auckland Blues on a two-year contract.[6] He was expected to return to New Zealand in February[7] in time for the beginning of the 2014 Super Rugby season.

Not convinced Luke came back better. Was Leon also on a sabbatical? I can't remember.

He 100% didn't come back better. He left on fire and came back too big and slow.
