Ashwins bowling stats are quite frankly ridiculous.

Add in the fact he is an extremely handy batsman and you have an absolutely world class player on paper.

Or do you ? Fairly large gap between his home and away stats…….

Same with Jadeja, having both on the same team just isn’t fair.

    ( definitely in India )

@Chris-B I saw a ball from the English spinner hit a crack and roll along the ground on day 2. It went for 4 byes.

There was a similar one this morning!

Not an easy pitch at all and Jadeja and Safaraz bobbled the trophy immediately after lunch - to the extent England probably had their noses back in front - but Gill and Jurel have done really well to guide this home.

I started watching after 4 down and to be honest, the pitch seemed to be behaving pretty well and the batters never looked in much trouble. Stokes deserves a lot of credit for his captaincy and the way he has handled his young spinners - he's shown faith in them and not been scared off by the odd bad ball. The trouble is that they may not get a look in for the home tests, somewhat like the NZ spinners.

Root should have stuck at number 3 a few years ago like Kane did instead of running scared to number 4. He's the best batsman and that batsman should be at 3.

Not always the case. Lara often batted four and Tendulkar always did ( Root doesn’t have a Dravid equivalent in the team though )

series gone and fair enough, India the better side. Lots of slating of Baz Ball - all i can say is as frustrating as i find it at times, people criticising have very short memories. We were bloody awful before Stokes / McCullum and even for those matches / series we've lost on their watch, we've been in the tests, there's been a bit of belief about and we've been fun to watch. As a long suffering England fan i'd much rather be watching this team play the way they are than what's gone before.

A good number 3, a very good number 3 in fact needs to be a semi opener. They can easily be thrust into the opening role if 1 or 2 goes out early. That means they have to be good with a moving ball, have the ability to blunt an early attack. Whis is something Kane Williamson does very very well.
Thats what Dravid (the wall) did
Had a look at Joe Roots stats, he only averages 39 batting at 3, where as he averages 51 at 4.

Stephen Fleming was technically number 3 for much of his career but he spent a bit of time in the middle during the first over back in the day

Jacques Kallis and Brian Lara usually did too. Steve Smith until very recently……Walter Hammond was usually 4 but sometimes 3.

As mentioned before Dravid/Tendulkar would be the best 3/4 in history. I don’t think ST batted first drop once in his entire, very long, career.

I think the best batsman is usually 3 but there are loads of exceptions.

Waugh, Border and Viv Richards spent loads of time at 5/6 when they were defintely their teams best batsmen.

                      another comprehensive day for India

Look, i get that right now, India is probably the hardest place to tour in World Cricket, and everyone battles there. And yes, England won a test which was a pretty big deal. But since then they've been flogged.

So why do they find it so hard to shut up? lots of chat about how great they've really been, and no one else would have done better. Positivity is great Ben, but so is reality.

ANd can we finally fuck the term "bazball" off for good? unless it means playing dumb shots at dumb times (sort of like Baz used to do in his younger times really aye?). India have scored more runs at a faster clip while you dumb pricks are trying to hit their spinners out of the attack and instead getting rolled for 140

The last score I saw last night was 173-3 - saw the score this morning and wondered whether I was looking at the wrong game. Can't believe Bairstow has 100 tests with so moderate a record - he plays the odd big innings when the conditions and the bowling are benign. Stokes isn't a good enough batsman to play as a batsman alone.

                          disagree.

They were in the tests twice - that's a bloody good effort. Hell, they got in front in the last test ... for a tour they have to be happy with it, just couldn't qutie get the extra few runs to force an outcome.

Flogged is too harsh. India have gone past them, but had to work bloody hard to do that.

100 run win, 450 run win, 5 wicket win, and now today.

I will concede Stokes is better than his record indicates and definitely a selfless batsman but he just isn’t an all rounder anymore.

In addition, I love the fact that India go from a test in 30C baking heat to a test surrounded by snow topped mountains - in a city with the same population as Nelson.

Dharamsala is such a picturesque ground.

I watched a few minutes last night when Foakes and Bashir were batting. The Indian commentator was saying that the groundsman had tried to provide pitches with less turn after the 1st test. Ironic eh. The Indian spinners are still dangerous on more batting-friendly pitches.

Yeah not many play as long as Bairstow for that return although he had a period a couple of years back where he was absolutely brilliant.

Didn't Bairstow completely wreck his leg a year or two back? Time to move on - he isn't the same player.

Shit series result for England, and one they needed if you ask me.

I think they'll be much more rounded for this result going forwards.

Dropping this here as not sure of which thread.

Fascinating info on the number of player reviews upheld. Taufel was incredible (no surprises). Really interesting how almost all umpires wind up in a band.

Also, this is since the beginning of the DRS era, so snicko and syncing with multiple cameras has changed ... along with hotspot.
