With Akira , it’s hard to know exactly his problem , is it booze , junk food , or maybe he’s just a lazy prick ?

But I’ve been watching him for a few years thinking he doesn’t look quite right physically, carries a lot of body fat , think of our best players in recent times with similar roles , jerry , Rodney , kaino , read , messam . They looked so lean and fit .

Then you look at akira , chubby face ,fat arse, , I thought maybe it’s genetics , but his brother is nothing like that .
If I was him I would be looking at a different franchise
Crusaders would be my pick , it will either make him or break him.

I agree and disagree with this. Agree the Crusaders would be the best for him and disagree the Crusaders will be the best for him because we may as well just hand them the trophy next year if they get the best out of him.

Why wouldn't they target him now that Read is leaving

yeah, a crusaders move would be great for the ABs, not so good for super rugby.
much better than heading overseas though, which you'd have to think is an option after that public dressing down. it'd be an awful shame to see the best of him in europe.

@Hooroo Maybe the Crusaders don't target Akira because they consider him a liability? They probably know more about him than we do.

Perhaps you are right but Reece was a liability they took a risk on and that has paid off in spades

@Hooroo The Crusaders initially only invited Reece for preseason, so they'll have done their due diligence at that time, so before signing him. They can't do the same with Akira.

If the Crusaders thought they had a chance to pick up a player with that much raw talent there is zero chance they wouldn't sign him.

@canefan I wonder if the franchises add education as an incentive to sign as well?

I reckon they should be, help these guys study/train for somethign post-rugby, if rugby doesnt pay off or they get a career ending injury.

Definitely. ALB, DMac and Moli all were/are associated with Waikato University (Bachelor of Health and Sporting Human Performance).

Rivez Reihana, from Northland via St Kents, is doing the same course now.

I'd say it's a lot more likely they haven't had the need for Akira these last few years. Next year without Read and Taufua they may be interested.

@Stargazer They could play Douglas at 6, they could play Akira at 8. They may not want to run their 8 into the ground like the Blues do so they may mix and match their 8 options. They could say we can get the best out of Akira by having him come off the bench for impact (the role that Taufua is currently playing).

Ridiculous statement, I think you need to get out more. I know any number of people that are very thin/chunky compared to their siblings. My 9 year old son is shorter than, but 5kg more than, his 11 year old brother and we feed them basically the same.

I wonder what the stats are in each franchise for percentage of home grown players living in their home city? It is surely not a coincidence that the Warriors are also rubbish most of the time. They seem to suffer from the same lack of accountability if you believe what you read

yeh i'd been at a session with the cantab npc coaches when they talked about selecting players.. their example was why they'd rather have Luke than Akira.. that's all data that the 'saders and them share.

as well as they're big on team culture fit - doesn't matter how good someone is if they don't fit in they they don't want them.. he'd most likely be a fail on that front too

@KiwiMurph Douglas will play 8 next season. They don't need Akira full stop.

Yeah I think of all possible destinations in NZ, the crusaders are the least likely.

Have heard through the grapevine we were pretty quick to say no when his manager shopped him around before signing his last contract at the blues.

yeh i'd been at a session with the cantab npc coaches when they talked about selecting players.. their example was why they'd rather have Luke than Akira.. that's all data that the 'saders and them share.

as well as they're big on team culture fit - doesn't matter how good someone is if they don't fit in they they don't want them.. he'd most likely be a fail on that front too

@WillieTheWaiter Nothing out of the Blues or Auckland camp to suggest he’s a team culture issue is there? Didn’t he get a players award one year?

Ridiculous statement, I think you need to get out more. I know any number of people that are very thin/chunky compared to their siblings. My 9 year old son is shorter than, but 5kg more than, his 11 year old brother and we feed them basically the same.

Well we should find out over time if and when he gets himself to the required fitness that the abs coaches require .
Their basic frames don’t look that much different , they looked more alike years ago when they were both playing 7s , one is at the required fitness now and one isn’t , one looks lean one doesn’t .

Ioane should move across the Harbour for a season. Train at High Performance Sport New Zealand in Mairangi Bay, and get drilled by Kieran Keane. Preston, Hunt, Ioane would be a good trio.

When Kieran Read retires, the All Blacks must be looking for a big bruising Nr.8 to face teams like England or Ireland. Ardie Savea was outstanding for the Canes with the Nr.8 jersey this season but Super Rugby is not test rugby. How many big Nr.8s are playing in the NZ franchises (except Read) ? Ioane is the only NZ player who has the physique to counter men like Vunipola, Stander or Picamoles. I don't see anyone else (Ben Nicholas and Mikaele Tuu, who are big men, are both very green).

I'd rather have someone skillful, there really is no need to get a huge lump like vunipola
