So much praise we will now crash and burn in Hamilton.

Even I will have to bear some responsibility for the upcoming comeuppance, for my best all-time 3rd seamer link.

we are all so scarred by the past

Yeah I was thinking that after reading @No-Quarter post. It's really hard to adjust the mindset that we're actually a good side now and not the much maligned black craps.

despite at least 4 years of continued excellence in nearly all forms, when the poms cranked on 350, and we lost a couple early, in my mind we were conceding a first innings lead of 150.

Been reading some commentary about Joe Root and how the captaincy is dragging him down brought up a fun question about best batsmen to never captain a side.

For NZ who would our best batsman who never captained the team be? Captain is defined as being the captain at the toss. So guys who only captained a couple of games when the regular captain was injured are counted.

I'm struggling to come up with names for the list. In recent times the only guys that come to mind are Astle and Richardson. Styris if we're counting ODIs.

Some of the older names might get in though. I don't think Donnelly, Dempster, Sutcliffe or Turner ever captained a test.

If he continues his current trajectory Tom Latham could enter the conversation in time

List of all time 3rd/4th seamers:

            Wagner really is exceptional.

            http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?bowling_pacespin=1;bowling_positionmin1=3;bowling_positionval1=bowling_position;class=1;filter=advanced;orderby=wickets;template=results;type=bowling

That's fantastic. While Kallis 'may' be a bit too far to topple, he should easily get into second place.

            How old is Wagner?

Funny how his list of "Major Teams" includes Otago but excludes ND. Little ole ND not worth mentioning.

Gulp. His is a hard role, and may find he suddenly so'oialos at any moment given his age.

I think his could be the hardest role to replace.

When it happens in your early 20's it's called getting Reiko'd.

Yes, although he will likely captain the black caps at some point too.

Pretty bored of reading about Archer racist abuse - was lead sport story on a few online rags today.

Wonder how big this story would have if England had won as they expected to

I'm glad that they are investigating, but has anyone produced proof that this actually happened?

I don't want to criticise Archer but this massive reaction is from a tweet of his that has not had (that we are aware of) any confirmation from team mates or others in the crowd (and knowing NZ, someone would have come forward and said 'yeah, I heard that dickhead and he was told to button it'). Perhaps he mis-heard or misconstrued a comment?

There will always be dickheads around but the good thing about NZ is that there are also plenty of people who will speak up and put those dickheads in their place.

NZ Cricket had to take the obvious actions to clamp down but it somehow doesn't feel right to me.

The person was located near the scoreboard according to the TV news. If the abuse happened while Archer was batting some NZ players have said they didn't hear anything themselves.

Hmmm. I really don't get why anyone would make that up, but I don't have a victim mentality. Just bizarre really, and as has already been said - one dickhead.

Difference between making something up entirely and jumping to conclusions and firing out a tweet.

The bit that gets me is why he didn't mention it to his management to follow through on but publicly commented.

We don't even know what was supposedly said. Are we talking colour based racist talk or someone commenting on him being a West Indian import?

The person was located near the scoreboard according to the TV news. If the abuse happened while Archer was batting some NZ players have said they didn't hear anything themselves.

@Bovidae I think it was when he was heading off the pitch after getting out. So I can understand if it wasn't widely audible to other players.

My gripe was the going straight to twitter rather than their usual process (which I'm sure they have in place) of talking to management and going from there.

"In a previous tweet, subsequently deleted, Archer further outlined the nature of the abuse, posting: “Can the guy that was yelling bbc and bc from the scoreboard area today come forward and tell me what those words mean please? Because I don’t...”

I'm puzzled. Was someone shouting letters? If so how are they racist? (Kidding)
If they were the words he should have understood them and has a right to be offended if I think those letters are the start of what was said.

He should also have understood them as being announced by a dickhead and get a thicker skin.
