There's a medium that can be found between bloated Super 18 and super intense but not sustainable Super Rugby Aotearoa.

Let's say they look at 10 teams - 5 Aus 5 NZ - for 2021 where everyone plays everyone once and then you play 4 teams twice.

I'd like to see the 4 teams twice be 2 teams from NZ and 2 teams from Aus so that it's somewhat fair.

It then ends up being a nice balance between extra NZ derbies/Aus derbies and fairness.

Of course it's not perfect - some teams will draw Crusaders twice and others will draw Force twice - but it's heading in the right direction.

I don't care as much about uneven draws as others. In the end the best teams come out on top. I genuinely can't think of a year where Super Rugby was won by an undeserving team.

Well resourced and underperforming we may well have been, but we were also capital-c Champions in 2014. And it's my sole purpose here to remind you all of that fact as much as I possibly can.

I have to defer to the opinions of those who have lived in Melbourne more recently than I, but I still maintain a Rebels team performing at a high level against all-comers would create a lot of interest. Whatever happened to the old saying that they could pack the MCG out for the opening of an envelope?

I'm not sure it holds up anymore. I recall in '99 there was a lot interest in the Storm winning the NRL. However, since then, and even though they've been even more successful, the interest just isn't there.

There's heaps of reasons why the interest isn't there for domestic rugby. But, for me, the most important are those I've already mentioned and, to be frank, parochialism - Victorians are very parochial and very proud of their (village) game. The NRL, another domestic competition, is a threat to that. So is any domestic rugby comp. The Wallabies, being an international representative team who plays, at best, once a year in Melbourne is not a threat to that and so is easy to get behind.

Another hurdle is that all of the big Victorian clubs have had some measure of success in the last 15 years or so and the AFL comp can be quite unpredictable. This means that your average potential casual fan of the Rebels is likely to be far more engaged in their AFL team and for longer stretches of the AFL season.

just to removed any doubt, these are the reported memberships for the AFL clubs last year

                    da4c2154-1fa2-479a-966f-53c544fe1977-image.png

im sure there is some creative accounting but that is the size the the beast Rugby is trying to compete with in Melbourne even before you looks at the A-League and the Storm and hell, the VFL gets some ok crowds, i go to watch Port Melbourne more often than anything else

there were multiple games last season that were mid table, mid season, so not playoffs or teams on a great run of form...and we're over 80k in the ground...they love their clubs

That is quite incredible. How is it that both the Swans and the Giants can have that many memberships in league and union heartland? How many memberships have the Tags got? Less than the Giants it would seem. That's an absolute disgrace.

@junior there is always small details like out of state memberships, the swans have a decent number of those as they were originally from south melbourne and still have a decent support base there, until the 200's their academy team was the Port Melbourne VFL side, similar things could be said for the Lions i would say

Yeah, I get that. I'm more interested in the Giants membership figures, which I find quite staggering.

But they know they're different sports. And I'm sure they know which one has an international profile and which doesn't. Explaining the difference is something else entirely. The point is, I reckon if the Storm and the Rebels each played a final at the MCG; the Storm vs the Roosters and the Rebels vs the Crusaders - with the proviso that they're equally well marketed - the latter would draw a much larger crowd because the game has an international profile and that would spin their wheels hard. Likewise a BC test vs a Kiwis vs Kangaroos test. And lastly, if you asked your average Victorian which of the two Australia national sides they knew of, the vast majority would say the Wallabies.

If I had to pick an Aussie team to drop, I'd struggle. Brumbies have history but Canberra is less than 400k population. Melbourne is saturated but also a key market. Perth is so far but the market isn't as saturated and they seem to have a decent following.

I’m not sure if it was a mistake or not, but on the AB podcast with Sir Ted, he said he thought that it should be the Force plus the three Eastern teams. Fro m that I assume he thought the Rebels should go.

If any team should go, it should be the Rebels. Not much on-field success, struggle to retain players, small local fanbase, but importantly no billionaire backer to come in and pay their bills.

From meetings today there is a very real chance SRA is played again in 2021 unless Aussie sorts its shit out.

From meetings today there is a very real chance SRA is played again in 2021 unless Aussie sorts its shit out.

Could we just add the PI team to the 5 NZ teams? Or add a new NZ team and PI?

Comp is good, but it needs more teams. Might as well try to plan for the future as self sufficient and help the island countries.
