This new spinner has some great discipline. Offered fuck all to the batsmen even if he's not bowling hand grenades.

    Santner should take notes.

      Bus change dropped.

      Sitter.

      Could have stuffed Aussie

Marnus can bat, but Jesus he has Lady Luck riding on his shoulder, as well.

Comms just saying that's the fifth time he's been dropped in this series and, as I recall, we gave him quite a bunch of lives as well!

This might explain why he takes so long to leave the field when he is out - takes him a while to believe that he actually has been caught!

The Henry Nicholls of Australia. They should really recalculate his average based on every chance being taken, and then drop him.

Officially, he's currently at 338 runs for 6 times out - averaging 56.33 for this series.

According to the NQ index he should be 338/11 - 30.72 - sitting next to Joe Burns watching on! 🙂

Comms coming in with some stats - Marnus is the second most dropped player since the 2017/18 Ashes - behind Ben Stokes.

At least he had the good grace not to fucking flounder a World Cup into the deal! 🙂

5 down against that attack is below par. Though that would be close to the highest run rate for a day in this series...

It's complicated but Australia lose they will go below 70% so NZ would at least be in front of them. However they potentially have a 3 test tour to SA which is not confirmed or cancelled at this stage. If they lose this test I imagine that the chance of the SA series being cancelled will decrease quite a lot.

If Australia lose this test and do go to SA we will need SA to either win 1 test or draw 2.

India is a bit more simple as their series against England is definitely scheduled to go ahead. They need another 110 points from their next games so either 3 wins/2 draws or 4 wins will see them above NZ.

I think our best chance is an Indian win in this game.

Yep . Paine and Green survive the new ball and swing it back to Aussie.

Short memories around the place, Tim Paine was MoTM just two tests ago! Has the second highest batting average of any Aussie keeper (behind Gilchrist), and despite a tough few hours is still as good a gloveman as we have.

Banter was a bit much late, but they were pushing to win a crucial test, been in the field all day, and it was more annoying than offensive. Happy to give him the benefit of the doubt given his track record so far.

No hundreds and the modern game demands a keeper with an average of close to 40 these days.

Well, ok we’re pretty spoilt with BJ to be fair, whoever succeeds him has massive shoes to fill.

But fuck Tim Paine, not remotely in that class.

No, but once again it's not like we've got keepers averaging 40 floating around. The cupboard is bare.

I'm a big Paine fan. What he's done with this team since Sandpapergate is truly remarkable, in terms of reputation and on-field performance. He was never going to be an all-time player, but he was the man for his time.

He is at the bottom of the pantheon of Australian skippers, but from where he was just a few years ago the fact that he is actually in that pantheon is an enormous achievement.

This test series has hurt that reputation though.

Has it? How? One exchange with Ashwin yesterday, which was pretty tame by historical standards. And a dropped catch, but not exactly a match-defining one. Yes it certainly didn't help him, but in the grand scheme of things I don't think it will linger that long in the memory.

and being fined for dissent towards the umpire.

And his carry on after being given out DRS earlier in the series

Neither has really resonated here. In the first instance, he didn't exactly abuse the umpire, what he said was fairly benign IMO. And I think most people sympathised with his 'carry on', which again was pretty light. It wasn't like he stood at the crease and refused to leave. In both instances he was just frustrated at what a lot of people thought were questionable DRS calls.

In the motherland, the Aussie cricket team behaviors is everywhere. Plethora of banter going around about proof that the DNA of team not changed etc. So that reputation has Defo been damaged.

Mind you ... depends on how much you care about Poms and Indians views .... I certainly wouldn’t!!

As long as the Aussies aren't cheating I couldn't give a fuck about banter out on the field. You take the emotion out of the game and it gets pretty boring. A test series isn't meant to be for the faint of heart, tests are a mental game more than anything and if you can throw the opposition off by whatever mean then good luck to you.

It’s more the Steve Smith pitch scrape that ppl are going on about.

Totally agree tho. Sport is entertainment.

Yeah, that was the biggest non-event ever. You can't get rid of markings that easily, and by that stage of the match there are deep markings for off, middle and leg, and even in between for the weirdoes that like to take a mark between middle and off and/or leg.

Batsmen constantly retake their mark to confirm which ones are theirs.

Steve Smith is just eccentric as hell and has all sorts of idiosyncrasies. I very much doubt the Indian batsmen even noticed? Has he commented?
