You can only be off side if the ball goes forward the TMO ruled it went backwards so he is not offside.

So you can be offside picking up a ball that went backwards.

Let me make this perfectly clear - you have to be put onside in that circumstance. Running past an imaginary line where the ball was in not being put onside.

I know it did too, but my understanding is that was not the ruling.

If so, why uphold the challenge?

Only if they ruled that the ball went forward, which is what the Captain’s challenge is for.

I can't see much benefit from them. Even if you have clear rules about these referrals where you have to be specific about what you're drawing to the referee's attention so that anything else can't be judged in retrospect. But even then people will get up in arms about a clear transgression not ruled on.

It's a no win situation.
