Interesting, I knew NZR was bankrolling MP and Drua - something they def do not talk enough about, should be shouting to the stars. But NZR and generating buzz and positive press do not go toether. But it seems that NZ Govt also backing MP to the tune of 4.5 million

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/exclusive-nz-governments-multi-million-dollar-funding-of-moana-pasifika-revealed/EHCXYOVDFLANREQMMXMP3K7QE4/

    Paywalled but

In response to a series of Official Information Act requests to government departments, Sport New Zealand this week confirmed to the Herald it provided the $4m underwrite to Moana Pasifika Limited (MPL) and a $500,000 operating grant for the Moana Pasifika Charitable Trust.

Sport New Zealand issued that funding via a transfer from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

The underwrite is available for a maximum of four years and includes an initial grant of up to $1m with no requirement to repay, and $3m loan facility.

Basically NZ is providing all the money and most of the players for MP, along with over half the players for their national teams. All you'll hear in the interantional press is the handful of Pacific born players in the ABs. 🙄

Big thumbs down for Queenstown as a venue. Shit field, badly needs lights, coverage shoddy.

Why couldn't they base teams around the periphery of the Waikato/BOP region, and bus two hours to the games at Hamilton?

@broughie Sure, but they play a Saturday afternoon game most weekends anyway. They are playing two night games a week in Dunedin in this period.

@tim Not being argumentative but in Cali I watch games anywhere from 1030, pre daylight saving to 1230am. But it is good that Rugby is back.

The DHL Super Rugby Pacific Round 2 draw has been reshuffled to give Moana Pasifika the best chance of being able to play their scheduled match against the Chiefs.

NOTE: The announced changes do not affect the draw for any Round 2 matches played in Australia.

The revised draw for Round 2 is:

Friday 25 February – 19:05 NZT - Highlanders v Crusaders – Forsyth Barr Stadium Dunedin

Saturday 26 February – 19:05 NZT – Blues v Hurricanes – Forsyth Barr Stadium Dunedin

Sunday 27 February – 15:35 NZT – Chiefs v Moana Pasifika – Queenstown Recreation Reserve (Wakatipu Rugby Club)

Plans are afoot to bail out of the Super Rugby bubble in Queenstown a week ahead of schedule, with New Zealand Rugby understood to be working through the logistics of returning the six Kiwi teams to their home bases next week.

Bizarre, right in time for 10k cases a day, possibly. With the iso requirements, we’re unlikely to get any games from the Blues! Unless they can self source and be allowed to use some RATs.

I took one for the team and watched the Aotearoa Rugby Pod. In summary, Parsons didn't want to put the mockers on the Blues so picked the Chiefs as his smokey. Mainly because of the return of BBBR, and Cane, ALB, Weber and Jacobson. Hall seemed reluctant to talk up his own team so said the Blues were favourites based on winning the last final. We get to the end of the show and Parsons finally does pick the Blues to win the competition while Hall was still non-committal and said one of the Blues, Chiefs and Crusaders. He talks up his fellow halfbacks, so I give him credit for that.

It looks like there has already been some movement of WTG players amongst the squads in Queenstown.

@macmanus Cortez Ratima (in the Chiefs squad) and Liam Coombes-Fabling, who was in the Chiefs WTG. They are Waikato teammates.

The Chiefs should be organising their return to Hamilton now.

The good news is that the Chiefs will now play MP at home (hopefully with some crowd). The bad news is when do MP play the Blues and Chiefs? Midweek games might be the only option.

It's an ever changing situation so who knows. I think that NZR are taking a good approach to ensure that their product gets on the shelves this year. They are being very flexible and pro-active.
The Queenstown jaunt may not have been perfect but meant that (most) teams were able to get their warmups done and games started.
I'd guess that players will be going back home with instructions to keep contacts and socialising outside of the team to a minimum for a while.

SR Aupiki move to Taupō is a good idea too. Hopefully this ensures that the comp kicks off. In fact with only four teams this could end up being a model for the first few years. Play it as a small tournament and if that means slightly extended squads to cover short turnarounds then that exposes more players to a high level.
