There were lots of Highlanders loose forwards around that time, but maybe mostly a bit earlier. Jamie Joseph. Isi Maka - as well as Taine and Josh. Maybe some others.

Was he a 10 or a 12 then?

Between him, Ranby and both Keith Lowen and Regan King (who I looked up earlier when things were a bit quieter - both debuted in 2002), the Chiefs had a lot of midfield options then.
