Just heard on Post-Match after Crusaders v Highlanders:
there is a strong rumour going around that Gareth Evens has signed with the Hurricanes! Replacing Callum Gibbins?

There were three yellow cards I saw on the weekend from head/arm/shoulder contacts
I'm of the opinion that all 3 could have been a penalty and a reminder/warning to be careful. Probably not in this day and age

However theses were very close to the "accidental, yet willing, contact" side of things.

Call them yellow? So be it

But it risks heading down a rabbit hole where any body vs head contact can conceivably result in 14 v 15 for 10 minutes.

There could (should?) be a lot of them - not so good

This is worthy of it's own thread. I'd add that a lot of issues are cropping up in double tackles.
In single tackles a trailing arm/leading shoulder is an indicator of reckless/foul play, quite reasonably in my view.
However, in double tackles it is quite usual for at least one tackler's arm to be impeded by the other tackler, resulting in leading shoulder.
Jack O'Piper quite naturally did not feel that Cane tackle in Stormers match was reckless or malicious. But TMO (no doubt correctly) cited the arbitrary protocols, which mandate yellow in such cases.
Kaino suffered in a similar way, although S O'B after four hours of discussion was ruled accidental.
        Urgent protocol revision, please.

@pakman @Siam - a lot of people have raised the idea of some sort of penalty between "free-kick penalty" and "yellow card" - to be used in these cases where it's clearly accidental head contact, not really reckless - but avoidable.
          Perhaps a 5-minute yellow?

@SammyC That media release also answers a question someone asked a while ago about Jager's eligibility. The media release says that he's been here since (early) 2014, so that means he's now NZ eligible.

Don't you support the highlanders? How many of them are from Otago? 🙂

Was talking about the other 2 anyway.. both have been here a few years now and you would understand if they looked for a starting opportunity elsewhere.

Did I hear correctly on the Radio Sport 6.00pm news that the Hurricanes have signed Toby Smith for two seasons? Surely there must be better options out there than him.

@Higgins It's been pretty widely reported that he's been headed to the Canes for Super Rugby so sounds right.

I think you are being a bit harsh there - he's a very experienced player who hasnt had much help in the tight 5 at the Rebels the last few years. I think he'll be a good acquisition for the Canes. Look at what they have done to a tight five player like Louisi. It's not like the Canes have gone and signed Angus Ta'avao or Sam Prattley.

Hurricanes sign Wallabies prop Toby Smith

Wallabies prop Toby Smith has signed a two-year deal with the Hurricanes.

The 28-year-old loose head will join his new Investec Super Rugby club for the 2018 and 2019 seasons after spending the past four seasons with the Melbourne Rebels in Australia.

Smith, who won two Super Rugby titles during four seasons with the Chiefs, played 50 matches for the Rebels as well as six tests for his birth country Australia.

"I'll always be grateful for my time in Australia and I have really enjoyed playing for the Melbourne Rebels, but when the opportunity to play for the Hurricanes came up it was very appealing to me.

"To play for a team with such a proud history and from everything I've heard a great culture, while also being closer to my young son is something I'm very excited about.

"I'm looking forward to moving to Wellington later in the year, meeting everyone, and getting stuck into pre-season training."

Hurricanes head coach Chris Boyd said Smith would bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club.

"Toby has a long and accomplished career that has already included nearly 100 Super Rugby caps, 50 matches for Waikato and a Rugby World Cup campaign with Australia.

"That sort of experience is a valuable asset for any team and we're looking forward to his input from next season."

Smith was born in North Queensland, but raised in Hamilton by New Zealand parents. He attended Hamilton Boys' High School and was a member of the 2008 New Zealand Under 20s squad which won the then IRB Junior World Championship.

He was a member of the Investec Super Rugby winning Chiefs teams in 2012 and 2013 before moving to Melbourne to chase his goal of playing international rugby.

Smith earned Wallabies selection for the 2015 Rugby World Cup squad and made his test debut off the bench against the USA in Chicago in late 2015. He will be ineligible for the Wallabies after he moves back to New Zealand.
