    LOL you guys are dreaming, there is no way in the world that an NPC would prepare our guys for international rugby. SR is a big part of the reason the ABs do so well, playing year in, year out against different styles and players - and all around the world making home advantage mean fuck all to the ABs. Go back to something like the (closest equivalent, with no international league attached) Japanese League will put us firmly on a trip to their level. The massive enthusiasm and support of NZR for SR is due to that, and it's not going to change. Also there'd be fuck all money in it.

      Posted by Yealden:

      In light of the likely culling of the Sunwolves tomorrow & all the chat around how much travel teams do (especially the RSA teams ... supposedly) I was keen to find out how far the Sunwolves traveled last year in comparison with fellow expansion buddies the Jaguares & three franchises (chosen at random) from the three foundation Super Rugby member unions - NZ, OZ & RSA. Now I have to stress that these are rough figures, calculated using distances from airline route maps & what i know of the teams traditional routes & modes of transport. Anyways, this is what I found about the 2018 season:

      🇯🇵 Sunwolves = 85,522 kms NB homes games in three different venues; played their last game in Tokyo in round 13 (Sat 12 May 2018) followed by games in Hong Kong, Melbourne, Canberra (Break for International Window) Singapore, Sydney, Brisbane

      🇦🇷 Jaguares = 66,240 kms - longest time away from BA was four weeks (Melbourne, Canberra, Auckland & Rotorua)

      🇦🇺 Rebels = 56,716 kms - longest time from Melbourne was two weeks twice ** (Pretoria, Cape Town & Brisbane, Dunedin)

      ** I believe the Rebels went straight to Dunedin from Brisbane but stand to be corrected on that

      🇳🇿 Blues = 56,707 kms - longest time away from Auckland was two weeks (Johannesburg & Cape Town)

      🇿🇦 Lions = 51,952 kms - longest time away from Johannesburg was four weeks (Sydney, Brisbane, Wellington, Dunedin)

      Make of these what you will - for what its worth, I feel better for doing it - and feel free to fire a question about this if you want; I'll be up for a little bit longer - cheers heaps NY 🇳🇿🏉

        Confirmation. Sunwolves gone after 2020 season.

        14 teams from 2021. No more conferences. Round Robin.

        https://super.rugby/superrugby/news/super-rugby-future-is-14-teams/

        The 14-team round robin format will see the removal of the current three conference system and will see each team play every other team home or away each season. This means 13 matches for each team, with two byes, in the regular season with the number of home and away matches varying from six to seven based on a two-year alternate match schedule.

        This will then lead into a new three-week, best versus best, super-charged, top six finals series. The top two ranked teams on the competition ladder will receive a bye in week one before hosting semi-final matches against the winners from a knockout round between teams ranked three to six.

              @KiwiMurph So the finals are back to how they used to be before the Super 18. And no more conferences. Good.

              The only thing I don't like is that teams don't have the same number of home and away matches (yes, I know they're alternating the next year), but that's what you get with an even number of teams.

              Glad the Jaguares are still there. Don't care about the Sunwolves.

                You do if you're trying to get money. Remember - the biggest one country audience for rugby is in Japan. They have all the money, and we want some of it 🙂

                  @nzzp Yeah, but money brought them to introducing the Super 18 format, which was a disaster. Money is one thing, good and attractive rugby that we want to watch in a fair and simple competition format is something else. That format is now fixed.

                    Did the old super 14 have top six playoffs or just a top 4? My memory is that top six came in with super 15 but not certain about that.

                          Okay, looked it up and the old super 14 had 4 final spots, so this tournament will be a week longer than the old super 14

                              Super 15. That was when the three pools came in so we had 3 pool winners and three wild cards.

                                    @Cyclops cos it went S12, S14, S15, S18, S15 and now back to S14 right?

                                    sweet, S12 is up next. Fuck off Jags and the Reds the tribe has spoken

                                    Does this mean in about 2025 we'll be back to super 6?

                                      So now it's going to be Super 14 from the Super 18.
                                      bye bye Sunwolves = 17
                                      Who are the other 3 sides being given the boot?

                                        @Frank are you really @MN5 with that level of knowledge?

                                        When it was S18 it included KIngs, Cheetahs, Force, they left at the end of 2017...so take them out and now SW and we get to 14.

                                        @Chris-B I remember Super 10 and CANZ but never a super 6...
