If google translate is correct, this media release confirms that Filo Tiatia will be the new Sunwolves head coach for the 2017 and 2018 Super Rugby seasons.

Jason woodwood has signed overseas with Bristol.
It's a shame as he is a very good player, very under rated
Does that mean Peter umaga Jenson is going to be the starting full back for canes next year?

Isn't NMS the incumbent fullback for the Canes or was before injury struck?

Don't think he was underrated. Super Rugby was his level, never going to be capped for NZ. He can be a very good player, but lacks the complete package to go any higher. He's a good signing for Bristol, but his ilk of player is rapidly replaced in NZ.

@Billy-Tell I did not mean he is good enough for All Blacks but a very good super rugby player who can play in a number of positions

Mitchell Drummond gone until the early rounds of Super rugby next year with a broken leg. I doubt he'll come back full of confidence and on fire. Given that he was presumably going to be our number one halfback, that's an unfortunate start to Razor's reign.

Not sure he was going to be your first choice halfback; Bryn Hall is better than Drummond and was more likely to start anyway. Unfortunate, nevertheless.

@Stargazer - Not sure I would have bet heavily against Drummond getting the first crack. He's been one of Razor's boys for several years - recruited him for Canterbury out of Nelson College.

Whereas Hall is a Blackadder signing and effectively pushed out of the Blues by Billy Guyton, which isn't a great recommendation.

Can't really say I'm a great fan of either - but, they're both doubtless better than Fukafuka!

In any case, Drummond's injury has certainly opened the door for Hall.

Hall wasn't pushed out of the Blues by Billy Guyton but by Augustine Pulu! That's a considerable difference.

                        @Chris-B

Possibly because Guyton was happy to stay 2nd choice?

                        or

because Hall was going to be 3rd choice and decided to move?

I guess none of us are privy to the discussions, but it seemed to me like Hall started last season as the Blues number one halfback, but around mid-season Guyton took that mantle off him and got the majority of the starts in the second half of the season (as a Mako$ supporter I was very happy about this).

Hard to think that Tana wouldn't have wanted to keep Hall if he thought he was significantly better than Guyton, given that No. 2 halfback isn't an unimportant position. And Pulu wouldn't be the first halfback to move franchises for a number one slot and then bomb (e.g. Kevin Senio).

@Chris-B Mate, your memory is due an upgrade. Guyton only started in rounds 2, 13 and 14. Hall started in all other rounds. By the way, I checked that.

Also, it's more likely that Hall wanted to move than that Tana wouldn't want to keep him. The announcement of Pulu's signing was made on 11 April 2016; Hall's signing with the Crusaders was announced on 9 June. I mean, why would Hall want to stay at the Blues if he has to do a step down from no. 1 halfback to number 2, while he can seriously compete for the no. 1 halfback spot at the Crusaders where he's replacing Ellis.

Fair enough - I would have checked myself, but frankly I couldn't be arsed. πŸ™‚ My memory was that Hall had lost his place after a drubbing in South Africa and Guyton played most of the remainder. Evidently incorrect. Possibly slanted by my impression that the previous season he also started out as number one halfback but gradually got supplanted by the other Mako$ halfback, Jimmy Cowan - possibly also incorrect (I haven't checked).

I don't think that really follows, though. If you're the number one halfback at a franchise, why wouldn't you want to stay and fight for your spot? It's only Pulu that they've signed and - if you're correct about Hall's place in the NZ pecking order, he'd have to be roughly 6th to Pulu's roughly 5th.

Bryn Hall didn't play the year prior (2015) as he was out pretty much all season injured. I don't think he played one minute for the Blues in 2015.

But yes Guyton was contracted for another year (2017) and they have young Nock signed up for a while. Based on this Blues would have known this when they signed Pulu that Hall would go.

Fuck Bryn Hall and Leon Fukofuka as the 2 halfbacks to choose from would hardly inspire me with confidence (both Blues outcasts as well). Maybe Jono Hickey could join as cover for Drummond as well.

Fuck Bryn Hall and Leon Fukofuka as the 2 halfbacks to choose from would hardly inspire me with confidence (both Blues outcasts as well). Maybe Jono Hickey could join as cover for Drummond as well.

They have tried to sign him before.

@Tim Hahaha forgot about that. Northern Districts blocked it didn't they? Fuck talk about scraping the barrel....

Blues re-signed for 2017 campaign: Prattley, Francis, Scrafton, Cowley-Tuioti, Mafileo, Kara Pryor
