    Been hanging at Eden Park

    https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/114992985/bledisloe-cup-the-startling-eden-park-numbers-for-all-blacks-and-wallabies

Following Australia's record-breaking win over New Zealand in Perth last weekend, the Bledisloe Cup goes on the line on Saturday night, but at a venue which carries such an aura for the All Blacks, and such woe for the Wallabies.

      Stuff messing with her

      https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/opinion/114918519/all-blacks-blediswoe-meltdown-leaves-steve-hansen-more-questions-than-answers

What is more, you can justifiably suggest that after being thumped so decisively by the Wallabies, on the back of a string of unconvincing performances leading back to last September's home defeat by the Boks, the All Blacks' aura has been well and truly shattered.

Aura has been found alive and well. Was spending a few days in London with a Guardian journalist apparently....

"If you’re just waking up in the Northern Hemisphere, be afraid - Wales, England and Ireland fans. The rumours of the All Blacks’ demise were greatly overstated - and while it wasn’t the best showing from a slightly sub-par Wallabies, it was a huge statement of pre-World Cup intent, that the World number one team is in no mood to meekly lay down their crown, just yet.

Plenty has been written over the past week (and in recent months) and this squad of 23 was too proud to take any of that, lying down. Even late in the 70th-80th minute there was no space for charity.

Big, strong - and a little bit angry. The imperious All Blacks are back, Ladies and Gentlemen. And the Bledisloe Cup stranglehold continues."

I know they're a real threat but I can't take Wales completely seriously at the moment, they've still got a big mental hurdle to overcome. I'm more concerned about England and Ireland.

Can't wait for this cup, love that there are more teams with a genuine shot. World Rugby is in a healthy state from the POV at the moment.

@No-Quarter Ireland are a RWC bottler too. Beating us in a home away from home on a narrow field, and a home win for the first time ever in over 100 years is not trying to beat us at a RWC. We know all about the mental difficulties of trying to put it together in a one off RWC knockout game

They've been in camp for months by the sound of it. That can often make players go stale, and it's hard to get the edge at the cup when it rolls around.

A lot will depend on how the tournament breaks in terms of QF/SF match ups.

In the abstract I can see Wales/Ireland winning the RWC, but the reality of winning three weeks in a row with the mental swings that happen is another thing. Like we saw in 2011 with the ABs the relief/achievement of making the final finally can be mentally hard to back up from, and we have seen that in all sports thus the old 'you have to lose one to win one' adage.

Even more challenging for Ireland would mentally need to back up from beating NZ/SA before a prospective SF.

Is that the likely QF for the team coming 2nd in the SA & NZ pool?
Clearly this Saffa hasn't applied his mind much beyond the pool games...

Fok. That's a tough one already at QF stage but as I mentioned elsewhere, this RWC has more genuine contenders than any I can recall.

I think Ireland would just be happy to reach a semi-final for the first time, which would also involve having beaten one of the heavyweights. I doubt they have the wherewithal do rinse and repeat for a semi and a final, especially given their attritional gameplan.

I know they're a real threat but I can't take Wales completely seriously at the moment, they've still got a big mental hurdle to overcome.

Oz need to beat Wales, England/France, NZ/Ireland/SA AND then win final!

yeah ... IReland will get NZ/SA, Probably Australia (or whoever beats them), and then the final. Basically there's no easy route this time around. NZ might have the easiest QF if we get Scotland - but the other 5-6 teams that are really competitive will be playing off. Quarters wlil be a weekend of superb rugby ... may book the Monday off already 🙂
