Nearly 50 NPC caps for Reihana. 23 years old. I think the right call to give him first crack over Kemara

@KiwiMurph and he is maturing as a player, huge opportunity to promote himself beyond a good npc player.

Scott Barrett as an AB captain. No way based on this interview. Not even close to good enough on this front.

Whereas Brad Shield's is a VG communicator. Top notch. I'm not suggesting him of course (as AB captain) but he has the qualities needed.

In general, super rugby has a much different vibe this year. In a very good way

It's all looking good so far. Like an amateur joke outfit to moving to a professional approach. Little thing like naming all the teams early. Media seem to be on board and supportive. NZ have 5 teams where all the fans can have hope.

The big changes needed are in Aust though. That fool McLennan has gone thank God. Cutting out the Rebels is a must do. 4 is still too many but better than 5 teams.

And getting a new group set up to focus just on super rugby. It still needs the right full-time leader but hopefully they get this right

It's all pointing in the right direction.

Apologies if I’m late to the dance, but are there rest policies for the internationals this season? Last year the ABs couldn’t play 5 games straight, I recall. Whereas the Wallabies could barely play 5 minutes. 😉

@game_film Razor was asked this earlier this year and indicated it would be more case by case than set rules

@KiwiMurph which is i think is a better approach, it was clear that some AB were capable of playing more and wanted to contribute to the super teams

@Dan54 I think Super Rugby have done a good job at aligning all the clubs to build some sort of hype for round 1. A nice improvement on previous seasons. They had all the captains in Auckland for the launch and something as simple as naming the teams at the same time allows for a little more analysis and excitement pre game.

Looking forward to round 1, hope my Canes can get the job done in the heat of Perth in what's a tricky start to 2024.

NZ rugby media & fans can be relentlessly negative. So far most of the noise about this season has been positive

It's strange but in a refreshing way.

It’s gonna take me awhile to adjust to not having the adidas gear. The last few years were pretty tame by their standards but over the past 20 years there were some absolute beauties.

see, i'd say Adidas were phoning it in for years, early ones showed some thought but for at least a decade they were just using a template so one team might fluke a good one (often the chiefs in my opinion for some reason) if the template suited them but often not. hardly any would be iconic as we've seen almost every suggestion for a heritage jersey is one from 96-2000

in saying all that i dont think Classic hit it out of the park but i think that might be the directions theyre being given. if you look at NRL, NPC jerseys or old school rugby jerseys in general and they often have something kind of iconic/unique...where are the super jerseys are generally just a solid block of colour...and sometimes the crusaders get stipes of some sort

If the Rebels, Force and Moana Pasifika aren't the bottom three I'll be quite surprised. The regular season may end up just being jostling for home finals.

They really need to switch to a six team finals format.

Hope I am wrong - but its hard to see this season being much different from the last....same teams fighting for the top of the table, and the fact that the top 8/12 teams can make the finals really makes a meal of it in my opinion..... still a lot to work on ... at a minimum I'd go to a 6 teams finals model, as per @frugby above.

                                          Concerns:
Hope the mouth guard tech doesn't become a new "feature" of an already complex game.
The rule modification has not stopped aerial tennis
Officiating still has a wide variability of quality or lack there of.
Commentators still cheerleading and talking over officials etc.

                                          Positives:
Couple of good sized crowds for 1st round - Saders v Chiefs and Landers v MP in particular ---- will be watching the Melbourne "Super round" with interest - but I expect to see a lot of empty seats. It will be interesting to see how the attendances will continue once we are in business as usual mode.

MP look to have improved - although it could also be a reflection of where the Landers are at.

Some good tries were scored even with the predictable rusty combos of the 1st round.
