All Blacks 2024

Happy new year Ferners.
Having just read through this thread I’m not sure what gave me more of a laugh, the midfield / fullback hoohah (@Punch_up remember Matt Burke from OZ played both centre and fullback) or @sparky naming Drummond.
I’m optimistic about the future but am under no illusion that replacing both Whitelock and Retallick at the same time is a massive hole to fill. They were set and forget and it didn’t matter which one you selected, they were reliable as and not to mention their influence around the team.
Same with Aaron Smith. Yes we have some good young talent but we could see some rocky paths ahead as these guys find their feet at test level. Which brings me to the 9/10 combination. DMac is a courageous player but for me he is a really good fullback that can play 10. Saw some signs in last year’s Super rugby but at this point he still needs to shore up a few things as a 1st 5.
There is a lot of developing to be done because whilst there might be 10 names you could pen into a starting XV and start to convince yourself that “hey that’s not a bad lineup”, trying to bring the rest of it together becomes a little harder. The makeup of the match day 23 and the other squaddies, there are still a lot of question marks on who has the right skillset and will fit whatever gameplan they have.
@ACT-Crusader
I've got a hunch that 9-10 isn't going to be problem.
Forward pack hp I think is the problem. -
All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Watched a doco last week that showed half the well off Romans were crazy from Pb water pipe poisoning.

Think the forwards have a good solid base to work from though. Good mix of experience in most positions, e.g. if Lord kicks on then he has Scooter's experience to lean on. Expect Robertson to stick with Frizzell at 6 but changes at 7.
15 & 12 are my concerns. Be good to see some new faces there and build some depth.

That deserved a lot more love.

Frizzell is playing overseas in Japan and is not eligible for selection.

I thought he was only away this year?

Not contracted to NZR so not eligible for selection for 2024,
I read a couple of articles quoting Jason Ryan that he was not happy he had signed overseas. -

I'm getting a 'not found' with a picture of an otter? and a message "You seem to have stumbled upon a page that does not exist" when I click on that link.

Caleb Clarke looks like he’s lost 10kg. Be interesting to see how he goes with his new body shape.. probably wants a bigger work rate and not so much running over people
@Dolamite I hope he has a big year and can up that work-rate because he can be a devastating runner. I wonder when his NZRU contract expires because I feel like if he has another sub-standard year he may be the next to make the shift to league where his game may be better suited. This coupled with the fact he's already made connections with the Rabbitohs and I wonder how much RTS has had an influence on a potential shift to the NRL.
I hope he stays in rugby but wouldn't be surprised at all if this eventuated.

@Duluth A well-argued piece. Now's not the time to ditch the no overseas rule. Razor should have more than enough playing talent to create a world-class Test team.

I'd argue he inherited one.
I'm more interested in how he develops it going forward, builds depth and develops players and combinations in key positions. He has 4 years to do that and If that means 1 or 2 embarrassing losses, then so be it.

@Tim 'well recognised as probably the best analytical voice in New Zealand rugby'

Marshall mentioned in that interview that he has spoken to Razor and has an idea that he will playing less predictable pod systems, more ball in hand, and more up-tempo.
@Frank And implied that Razor was a little frustrated by the AB tactics.....
