Preseason games on Saturday, 13 June 2020:

Lindisfarne 1st XV v Hastings Boys 2nd XV at Lindisfarne. I think the kick-off time is 12pm.
      St John's College Hastings v NOBM colts @ SJC - 12pm.

Edited to add that Napier Boys is playing a 1st XV trial game at 10.30pm.

Hmmm, the scholarship programme at Lindersfarne seems to be kicking into overdrive. They seem to be fielding a team as brown as Hastings these days. 🙂

@Nepia But the money seems to be a bit limited this year with them only being able to list 20 players on their team sheet. The last two positions must have proved too difficult for their bean counters to finance!

                    Sat 4 July results:

                    • Palmerston North BHS 2nd XV 24 - 41 St John's Hastings 1st XV
                    • Napier BHS 2nd XV 21 - 31 Rathkeale College 1st XV
                    • St Paul's Collegiate 1st XV 17 - 29 Napier Boys 1st XV
                    • Palmerston North BHS Rector’s XV beat Te Aute (Centenary Match) by much

Apparently, that last game was a trashing (not unexpectedly, I think); maybe that's why nobody posted the score.

From the article below about Napier Boys 1st XV:

                      2020 Squad:
Wesley Akeripa, Kaitiaki Broughton, Gus Brown, William Carter, Jake Christian-Goss, Mitchell Curran, Nicholas Ennor, Nathan Fialip, Max Gerber, Rakai Henare, Reece Henderson, Carlos Kemp, Jock Kilmister, Bethel Leutele Malasia, Gilgal Leutele Malasia, Iafeta Maa, Ethyn Martin, Tipene Maxwell, Lochi Mead, Afa Moleli, Kaleb Pirie, Max Ratcliffe, William Robinson (c), Ezekiel Stewart, Jayden Stok, Hugh Taylor.

This must be Jayden Stok's third year in the 1st XV squad. According to the article, they only lost 8 players.

                      .
                      Interesting:

With no National Top Four tournament this season in the wake of the Covid19 pandemic semifinals have been introduced to the Super 8 competition for the first time.

Unfortunately, the article below about Hastings Boys 1st XV doesn't give the full squad.

This is the team to take on Palmerston North BHS on Saturday:

                        15 Adam Bibby, 14 Troyden Bird, 13 Eldius Oli (co-captain), 12 Elijah Mataira, 11 Mefi Tupou, 10 Hoera Stephenson, 9 Jehmial Ross, 8 Cooper Flanders (co-captain), 7 Josh Leach, 6 Kaihau Pasikala, 5 Josh Beehre, 4 Fraser Taurima-Heperi, 3 Tini Nu'u, 2 Manahi Goulton, 1 Mosese Fineanganofo.

Substitutes: Forwards, 16 Jacob Dorward, 17 Aone Lolofie, 18 Donovan Godinet, 19 Vikta Tavita, 20 Bonham Edwards.
                        Backs, 21 Phillip King-Panapa, 22 Andrew Hayward.

                        .

Regular co-captains, hooker Jacob Dorward and midfield back Andrew Hayward, have been named on the subs bench which is an indication of the tremendous depth within this season's squad. Sixteen-year-old Year 12 No 8 Cooper Flanders and Year 13 centre Eldius Oli will have the co-captains' roles on Saturday.

                        .

Flanders pointed out 11 of last year's National Top Four competition winning squad have returned this season. They include winger Mefi Tupou, locks Fraser Taurima-Heperi and Donovan Godinet and himself who will be eligible again next year.

                        .

Hastings Boys are getting smashed. Defending for most of the game against some really big boys from PN.

Napier Boys are dominating, but can't convert that dominance into points.

                              Half time:
                              Palmy Boys 15 - 8 Hastings Boys
                              Napier Boys 5 - 0 Gisborne Boys

Since the break, Palmy Boys have scored another try. It's now 22 - 8 to the boys from the Poo.

                                Napier BHS 24 - 0 Gisborne BHS
Palmerston North BHS 28 - 5 Hastings BHS

                                CNI
                                Feilding HS 38 - 0 St John's Hastings

Napier Boys fully deserved their win. They were dominant all game, except for a brief episode in the second half when they had to defend their try line, scrum after scrum, until Gisborne made a mistake. The score could have been a lot higher. Gisborne gave away a lot of penalties when defending in their 22 and they thoroughly deserved to be carded for it, but the ref kept the card in his pocket. A few handbags were thrown around, too, as Gisborne boys got a bit irritated from being under the pump all the time. It seemed also a spectator standing near the Gisborne end of the field got involved at some point. Not good. Anyway, good start from Napier boys, but it's too early to really say how strong they are. Gisborne may just be very weak. Particularly, Napier Boys' ball handling, defence and overall decision-making were good.

Hastings Boys was the opposite of Napier Boys. They were dominated for most of the game. Palmerston North have some really big boys in their squad and they played well. Hastings had to defend for most of the game and sometimes the big boys from the Poo just walked straight through them. In the second half, Hastings got a bit more ball and attacked more frequently, but they couldn't get through the Palmy wall, even when they had a man more when a Palmerston North player was sent to the bin. What let Hastings Boys down most during the game was their handling errors. That's a big work-on. From the Hastings players that I recognised (couldn't see jersey numbers), Cooper Flanders and Mefi Tupou played well. Hastings Boys have lost about 8 players from last year. That's not many, but most of these players were their stars (a.o. Latrell Smiler-Ah Kiong, Julian Goerke, Jordan Thompson-Dunn, Emil Crichton, Joeli Rauca). They were missing a few players in this game, too, but I don't think this team is as strong as last year's.

I didn't see the CNI game, but I don't think the score will surprise anyone. St John's always finishes close to the bottom of the table and FAHS is probably the strongest in their pool.

Hastings Boys are getting smashed. Defending for most of the game against some really big boys from PN.

Napier Boys are dominating, but can't convert that dominance into points.

                                  Half time:
                                  Palmy Boys 15 - 8 Hastings Boys
                                  Napier Boys 5 - 0 Gisborne Boys

Since the break, Palmy Boys have scored another try. It's now 22 - 8 to the boys from the Poo.

I guess this year is a good year to have a dip with no Top 4.
                                  🙂
