I never really got this thread, TBH.

And then I volunteered at my son’s cricket club. He’s decent, but will peak at prob club level.

And thus, I love being properly involved. Reading through this is so relatable in so many ways. Surrey cricket gets so much right, but the players parents have so little idea about how much small decisions, on their part, fuck everything up.

@MajorRage there are parents who fuck it up for everyone.

For all the challenges of running a senior Rugby club, I would take it over running kids sport of any kind, because the egos your dealing with are far worse.

Good on you for getting involved. My Dad was the coach, bus driver, and manager for my junior cricket out in the country, and while it had friction occasionally it was a great experience, looking back.

      One for you @NTA https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/articles/cy0qg92de8vo

"In my experience, from what I see day to day, Australian rugby union is in fantastic health, when you are on the ground here and you experience the true reality of the [size of the] AFL and rugby league," he tells Rugby Union Weekly.

"The club game here is in rude health. You just have these two other sports that are thicker in the blood [of the Australian sporting public].

@MajorRage once you take NRL and AFL into account, sure.

The Brisbane club scene isn't actually too bad - at Premier level. There is basically nothing below it of course, because QLD Subbies is a Friday night comp that is practically dead.

And this is the issue: people only see the green grass in their backyard, and ignore the neighbours' dusty wastelands.

            In Sydney Rugby this week:

7 Matches forfeited across Womens, Premier, and Subbies
Another 8 games in Subbies alone don't have referees.
In the meantime, there are 18 schools games that are getting officials appointed.

And people wonder why I keep saying schools are fucking the game up.

Just had our field closed until Thursday after the rain in Sydney - which sucks as we train Wednesday nights.

Suspect it is mostly a move by Parra Eels to keep everyone away from the facility as they probably chopped it up playing on the main field there Saturday

TBF, while the statement itself is complete hyperbole,

There are a huge number of incredible athletes with the right body shape in Australia playing AFL and NRL. It isn't all that hard to imagine the quality of the Wallabies if guys like Tino, Haas, Liam Martin up front, and Moses, Hammer etc in the backs grew up playing rugby. Couple of big AFL units would help as well. This country is jam packed with sporting talent, and unfortunately for rugby, they don't get first pick.

@mariner4life that's true of every country that plays rugby - most people are playing a different sport.

And the NRL is over represented by Kiwis and Pasifika these days anyway.

i said the right body shape. England's huge soccer playing population isn't going to have the same rugby pool.

Australia has heaps of islanders, and lots of tall white dudes. Oh and fast as indigenous blokes too.

England's soccer players, like other country's soccer players are lightweight because they're playing soccer. They aren't midgets. If they preferred to play rugby they'd have bulked up.

i get it, does league have any presense in south africa? dont think so, so doesnt feel like there is direct drain on the "rugby body type" or those that want to play an impact physical sport

                          I fucking hate that attitude.

A club I AR'd a few weeks back were total fluffybunnies against our guys, but besides a bit of shit directed at me at the end of the match, it was all onfield so I didn't hear it and couldn't report it. That plus the cannanball tackles at knees, swinging arms, shoulder charges.

Basically they're pointing at the ref and telling him he's fucked to his face and he did NOTHING about it. And I knew at that point, even if I heard something, it wasn't going to matter because the ref wasn't going to do shit. One of our blokes later told me a player on the other side said "this ref's a useless fluffybunny and that AR is a fluffybunny as well" to his face.

I call the Comp Administrator - they say to email them the details, which I did, and nada.

On the weekend I get a request from someone who played the same fluffybunnies on Saturday to send through my report as they've decided - surprise, surprise - to be a bunch of fluffybunnies again.

Now that it happened to an eastern suburbs club it is suddenly an issue. But when a western sydney club like me reports it? Fuck. All.

So that club of fluffybunnies we played in R7 are going to be at our place Saturday for R14. We've missed finals so we're just looking forward to cracking on with a couple of games and getting back to the pub.

He was already Director of Rugby at the Woods, so putting an extra hat on there.

Of course the rumour mill says "everyone" is "appalled" that the existing coach (Dave Telfer) was sacked, particularly as he was Colts Coordinator for a period as well.

And then the rumour mill turned at the start of the year, saying Telfer was a divisive figure and caused players to leave.

                              🙄

It is way too much intrigue for what is cowshed footy.

Lot of games rained out across Sydney so we ended up getting a ref for both games.

They issue: they just weren't harsh enough. Multiple opportunities for more yellow cards which would have escalated to red fairly quickly and the refs fluffed it. I tried reporting a high tackle in first grade but the ref didn't want to know.

However, the union officials who were there saw enough to give them a whole bunch of shit to answer for, and I'm going to cite some of their blokes anyway

The worst is when your 2nd Grade make it and your 1st Grade doesn't and you're scrambling because guys played 2 games most weeks

yeah we have somethign called the selection integraty rule where even if someone has qualified for 1st grade....if they were starting 2nd they can still be selected...we cant just flood the 2's bench with guys that only played 1st grade

but its annoyingly complicated, plus lodging injury/berievment exemptions

@Kiwiwomble yeah it can be a pain.

In Subbies here we've got "Open Selection" which means if you have consecutive grades playing on the same day, you can pick who you want between those two grades - or more grades if you have them. Of course Colts is different but they are qualified Third Grade if NOT playing Colts.

Must be registered by Round 11 (of 14)
Must have played 2 separate rounds (i.e. can't qualify playing 2 games on one weekend)

After that: your last 7 games.
If you start 2s and back up for 1s for 4 weeks, only the 2nd Grade games count etc.
If you bench both, only the 1st Grade games count.

All sorts of exceptions e.g. if you played two-thirds of the year in a given grade you can get dispensation (maybe the starting hooker was injured and so on)
