@nzzp Foster really decent bloke, middle of road professional Rugby coach.
comparator: Sir John Kirwan.
Top bloke, legend of the game, knighted for many reasons, and not a top level coach at all.
and yet paid TV analyst. Or, TV rugby personality? Same thing these days I guess...

Good call. Naive is probably right.
Update: I think a mix of thin skinned and naive.
His talking about the games in 2021 were something like (not a direct quote) we smashed Tonga 102-0, then beat Fiji by 57 and 60- but still some people weren't happy.
I remember those Fiji games. They were coached by Vern and Ryan - and their forward pack scored a try or two against us up the guts. They looked sharp. People were right to critique the performances.
He never looked entirely comfortable in the way that GH and Shag looked. Both of those guys wouldn't take a lot of shit. Maybe deep down he knew he didn't have the street cred of his predecessors

that just tells me hes out of sync with the fans....i think game against the PI nations are important....but most dont want to see huge blow outs...and it definitely doesnt offset loosing to argentina or ireland at home etc

He selected Jordie Barrett on the wing, several times I think. Unforgiveable.

that once again comes down to his idea of all he needed to do was get the 15 best players on the pitch, regardless of position...the overall rating on "EA Rugby" is all that mattered

He only selected him at 12 once Havili got injured. Like Razor injury was Fozzie's best selector

IIRC, Jordie at 12 was discussed before Havili was unavailable (maybe the reason he played 12 for the Canes?). He wanted to play 12 but was excellent at 15 so there was reluctance and much conservatism in the mix too.

Havilii should have been dumped long before he was injured. The fact Razor reselected him in 2024 was a massive blight which has since led to lots of other well documented blights.
At least Foster saw the light and didn't blight by keeping Jordie at 12 for the big games.

Yeah, that first Fiji test we had Blackadder, Sotutu and Frizzell who were beaten to the punch at breakdown a lot. It was only the last 20 where Fiji faded and Coles scored about 4 tries from rolling mauls where we pulled away but we struggled for large periods of that test.
Beating that Tonga team shouldn't even be mentioned as a test. They had to pull a bunch of guys out of Auckland club rugby to make the numbers as covid rules at the time didn't allow for them to pick most of their overseas players.

That Fiji test essentially made Ryan's name, they were really well drilled. What's stange is that it doesn't seem to have given Cotter much pop. I know that he is planning on retiring but he is one of the names who I think has the philosophy to be very successful at the next level with players of AB talent.
